ROCKUMENTARY: DECEMBER 20, 1977

#1 – Debby Boone: “You Light Up My Life”

Joe Brooks was a director of second rate movies, primarily intended as a vehicle for him to utilize a time-honored Hollywood technique, the infamous “casting couch”, to score with his actresses and singers. That eventually got him into trouble with the law, and he killed himself in 2011 rather than face trial for a series of rapes.

This film started life with the title “Sessions”, and it starred the perky Didi Conn, who was terribly miscast as a singer who had no problem with promiscuity even when she was engaged to be married. It just didn’t work. Didi was best at portraying innocence, and her behavior didn’t run true to character. It told more about Joe Brooks than it did about her.

Brooks wrote this song and eventually re-titled the film to align with the song. It was sung by Casey Cisyk who voiced over Didi Conn in the film. Casey was a victim of Brooks’ casting couch and took him to court over it years later when Brooks didn’t deliver on his promises. Brooks did in fact get an Oscar and a Grammy for this song, which marks the high point of his checkered career.

Debby Boone recorded it and got a Grammy of her own for it. Her father, Pat Boone, insisted it was an inspirational song about God, but nobody who knew Joe Brooks would believe that!
