On Friday, I was on the train to New York to do a teach-in on Ferguson at NYU. Beats headphones on, lost in thought, peering out the window, I suddenly saw a white hand shoving my work carry-on toward me. Startled, I looked up to see the hand belonged to a white guy, who was haphazardly handling my open bag, with my laptop perched just inside to make space for himself on the seat next to me.
That he wanted the seat on the now full train was not the problem. That he assumed the prerogative to place his hands on my bag, grab it, shove it at me, all while my computer was unsecured and peaking out, infuriated me. I said to him, Never put your hands on my property.
His reply: Well, you should listen when I talk to you. That line there, the command that when he, whoever he was, spoke, I should automatically listen encapsulates the breadth of the battle against racism we have to fight in this country.
To have a white man in 2014 demand that I listen when he speaks is the height of racial disrespect and indignity. To have a white person shove my belongings to the side rather than simply get my attention and ask my permission is an unnecessary level of disrespect, one that conveys yet again that their needs matter more than my own.
I do not exist to make white people comfortable. The fact that I know that and act like it makes white people even more uncomfortable.

Nully, I can’t deny you this enjoyment and belly laughs. I have to ping you!
Well, judging by the size of the woman....
Seriously though, these activists and organizers don’t realize they’ve jumped the shark. I can’t seem to get excited by false narratives no matter how many times they get the spotlight.
The behavior of this woman is entirely understandable, in fact, encouraged by society.
Who are the people who park in front of Walmart, in the line of traffic to wait while another person from the car goes in and shops? Only one guess needed, we’ve all seen it.
Who parks in front of the retirement homes only handicap entrance, and while another member goes in texts on her phone? Other people, in walkers and wheelchairs had to park far away instead of getting to use what is normally a rotating area for everyone. Instead, for 20 minutes only one person got to use it for texting.
Which minority group gets to cut in line, obnoxious and with feral behavior?
The incident described in the article is the natural progression.
It’s going to be tough to bring civilized behavior back to the feral population.
The majority of the comments on Salon seem to be doing just that.

Yeah, I thought we have heard Brittney Cooper before.
These incidents happen to her all the time apparently.
This is embarrassingly stupid - not to mention the fact the only person who has definitely said or done anything racist is this author. She has no evidence whatsoever race influenced how this guy behaved and that he wouldn't have treated another 'white male' the same as he did her.
What a hilarious self-parody. She shouldn’t have her stuff laid out all of the place anyhow. Plus the paranoia is off the charts!maybe a visit to the psychiatrist is called for.
From the size of her in the picture, was there even enough space for the guy to sit next to her?
Oh you BIG effin pandered-to spoiled black brat. You think the world owes you a living, you’re not even deserving of an apology.
Spend your much-too-available time and the small intellect you have and do a “teach-in” with the brothas and sisters: Keep their hands to themselves, leave other peoples’ properties alone, get a job and a work ethic, study, pray, obey the law and just otherwise mind your own effin business.
Guaranteed the encounter did not happen the way she’s describing it. I’d bet her life on it.
Has nothing to do with color....the guy was outright rude and condesending...so she needed to deal with it as it is and not what she wanted to make it. How did she know he wasn’t refereing to her sex rather than her color????
Idiots have been so pre-programmed that their sensitivity guages are completely off point.
I tend to think since they don’t and won’t address their own it’s just easier to blame anybody else....first it was police and now it’s white-supremecy.
We are all born equal...what we make of life does not mean we will end up equal. Making wrong decisions and stupid behavior will push you down the ladder no matter what you’re color...learn how to engage as human beings with dignity for all...including the white’ people they have their pants in a knot about..again!
You don’t suppose there was an even more polite way she could have asked him not to touch her computer. Talk about looking for a fight.
They are completely unafraid to publicly blame white men for all their many discontents, trumping up rape and privilege charges in order to marginalize & punish. This includes white feminists as well and it smacks of racism to me. Its as if they would like to see white men governmentally hobbled with a kind of reverse affirmative action.
I for one am getting tired of seeing these true extremists continue this divisive behavior with impunity. High time it was met head on.
.
Indeed - I especially like this exchange:
Suppose you, an educated professional black woman, had entered a crowded train and some self-entitled white man was sprawled in his seat, listening to his self-entitled music on his self-entitled headphones, oblivious to any and all. In fact, he was soooooo self-entitled, he was just fine taking up the last free seat in the train car with his laptop and other clutter.
You approach and, nice, educated professional black woman that you are, ask, “Sir?” You try to speak three times but he doesn’t look. You don’t want to offend him by putting your hands on him so you simply try to move his belongings over so you can take the seat that you, not he, paid for.
He shrieks at you, “Never put your hands on my property!”
You say to him, “Well, you should listen when I talk to you”.
Sounds reasonable to me. Everybody calm down.

@Maezeppa
If that had happened to her, we would now be reading her screed where the guy sitting listening to music was a product of white privilege, and that this also has something to do with lynchings.

Looks like she needs 2 seats.
That said, let her gripe. She obviously feels very, very inferior.
.
Apparently there weren’t any spaces on the train which weren’t next to her.
So he had already politely asked the black blimp to remove her possessions from the second seat and she ignored him.
She was just using her Black Privilege to let whitey know where he stood in the hierarchy.
