Just days before he shot to death a 17-year-old German exchange student, Markus Kaarma told hair stylists he had been waiting up to shoot some kids who were burglarizing homes.
He told them they would see it on the news.
Kaarma hoped to bait an intruder by leaving his garage door partially open and placing a purse inside, prosecutors said. And when he did, a motion detector alerted him early April 27. Kaarma took a shotgun outside and almost immediately fired four blasts into the garage. Diren Dede, unarmed, was hit twice. He died after the final shot hit him in the head.
For those reasons, Kaarmas castle doctrine defense, which allows people to use deadly force to protect their home and family, failed him Wednesday. A Missoula jury convicted him of deliberate homicide.

So now the situation has 100$ bills “OUTSIDE” of the garage.
Have at it.
Step a foot in for no reason and you may get a silent 22 through your brain.
Get It?
I was in Aschaffenburg, Germany last month and saw a woman drop her wallet out of her purse as she was grabbing her change purse to buy something from a vendor. Someone who could have easily walked away with it picked it up and handed it back to her. I could actually believe a scenario where a German saw a wallet laying on the ground and would try to alert the owner.
We are talking about baiting aren’t we? I thought that was the case. How is this n?ot the same as leaving the garage door open (with goodies in sight) to draw in the thieves while waiting with a shotgun? Really, you don’t see the difference?
So-called legal entrapment only occurs where one induces another to commit a crime that one would not have normally committed. Merely leaving a garage door open cannot be considered this; Kaarma would have somehow forced Dede to have entered his garage, which he did not.
Liberals even consider bait cars entrapment.
The jury was wrong.
Read “Kaarma would have somehow had to have forced Dede to enter his garage”, i.e. to really have been entrapment.
I leave my door open every day. I have over 30,000 bucks worth of “stuff” in there.
I know my neighbors and they know me.
I have the ability to Shoot to Kill, Taze, Mace, and beat the crap out of any asshat that comes in my garage without welcome. I do NOT trust this world outside of my neighbors.
Thieves are of Judas and I will help them along to their suicide.
Correct conviction. The kid was a punk, but the shooter set out to kill him. Not remotely self defense.
No, not in this case because he intentionally left it open to draw in the culprits and waited with a loaded shotgun.
That makes all the difference whether you want to believe it or not! As law abiding and pro home defense as I am, I could never abide by someone who planned and executed this premeditated act! There are lawful qualifications - premeditation is a major one!
Sorry, doesn’t apply here... Keep trying to defend planned murder of anyone who breaks into your house. Your actions just describe carelessness in a safe neighborhood.
Why were they in that location?
You admit that Dede is a “culprit” then.
No, it makes no difference.
Answer it.
Come on! He planned to confront the intruders with a shotgun! Probably stayed up all night to be sure...you don’t see anything different here?
Right, a thief enters your house unsolicited and it’s “planned murder”.
There’s a reason why Missoula MT has been termed the “People’s Republic of Missoula”, remember.
Why were they there?
Answer it!
You admit they are “intruders” too.
This moron has no answer. Trick or Treat was 7 weeks ago.
I have had enough of idiots defending idiots.
Walk into my garage that happens to be wired for sound and lets see how it works out.
Seems to be too many immoral and illogical folks here tonight (my reasoning of course)! I give up. Can’t seem to get across a point about the difference between home protection and baiting while waiting with a shotgun...oh well. I differ and always will in this instance.
You folks deserve the police baiting and prosecution that is warranted by your responses. Good luck.
Why were they there...!
