The Obamas talked with People magazine about dealing with their "own racist experiences," as the magazine described.
Michelle Obama told one story that recently took place, even as she was first lady of the United States.
"I tell this story – I mean, even as the first lady – during that wonderfully publicized trip I took to Target, not highly disguised, the only person who came up to me in the store was a woman who asked me to help her take something off a shelf. Because she didn't see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her. Those kinds of things happen in life. So it isn't anything new," Michelle Obama, who is 5'11", said.
She also said that her husband, Barack Obama, was asked to get coffee when he was wearing a tux. "He was wearing a tuxedo at a black-tie dinner, and somebody asked him to get coffee," she told People.
The president told his own experiences. "There's no black male my age, who's a professional, who hasn't come out of a restaurant and is waiting for their car and somebody didn't hand them their car keys," Obama told the magazine.
So, in the past i have been asked to reached for an iten off a shelf at Vons, Albertsons, Kohls, Target, Best Buy and Sears. Now because each time the individuals were all older women who were short, was that “youngism”? Did they demean me and make me help them because i was young? In fact, years ago, when my hair was really long my wife and I were in the auto parts store and the guy said “Can I hlpe you two ladies?” and when I turned around he said I’m sorry. Who cares? Who cares that this happens? I have been mistaken for workers at many stores. Just because I wear a tie. If we are going to be this sensitive and pissy about everything we might as well fold up as a nation and live behind out walls and never talk to anyone. It’s crap like this that creates racism, not diffuses it.

I know exactly where they’re coming from. As a white guy I get mistaken for the CEO of some big business all the time One time I was minding my own, and this very attractive secretary asks me to sign off on next years budget for some huge company. I’m telling you that happens all the time. I believe the obamas on this one...
The only reason I would ask her to help me get something off the top shelf is that we were looting side-by-side in Ferguson.
She must not have seen Michelle Antoinette's entourage either (servants, bodyguards, reporters).

I felt so good. ... She had no idea who I was. I thought, as soon as she walked up — I was with my assistant, and I said, ‘This is it, it’s over. We’re going to have to leave.’ She just needed the detergent.
Charming and funny two years ago. Racism now.”
I’ve been asked to help take things off upper shelves, too. Reverse racism, obviously. Except the I’m white (well somewhere between pink and beige) and the ones asking for help were too. It couldn’t have been related to height.
Screw it. Still reverse racism.
We’ve been given a good, probably honest, picture of an entitled b***h who disdains ordinary people needing help. No surprise.

The valets I see are all hispanic or middle eastern. And they don't wear suits, let alone tuxedos.
It's discriminatory because it's like asking a short person to hand you something off the bottom shelf.
It emphasizes her height and ropes her into a business transaction she didn't enter the store to engage. "Hand you something off the top shelf? Ain't nobody got time for that!"

What does it mean when a black person asks me to get something off the top shelf of a grocery store? I am 6’4” and she was about 5”6”. Was I racist because I got it for her?

My husband and I were shopping at Target when the power went.
So while my husband went through the checkout line, I waited near the exit. A woman walked up to me and said, “What are you telling the customers about how long the lights will be out?” I was puzzled as to why she might have thought I worked, except I was sitting on my mobility scooter, so she may have assumed I was a greeter. In no way was I offended. I thought it was funny.
Moosechelle is a victim. She is one vile species.
So big deal, somebody asked her to get something off a shelf for them. If this actually happened, I’m sure the person didn’t even know who she was, and just figured she was a tall shopper who could help them. Just yesterday I asked a gentleman to get some packages of vegetables from the top shelf in the freezer section for me. There were only a few left, and they were way at the back of the freezer. Being 67, and with physical infirmities, I didn’t want to try to climb up onto the ledge of the freezer and take the chance of getting hurt, so I went searching for the first man I could find, and asked him to help me. I’ve done it in the past, and will probably be doing it down the road. Back when I was a kid, the grocery stores used to have sticks with a nail stuck into the end that you could use to pull down something out of reach. Today you have to find somebody who has a longer reach than you.
