(CNN) -- The debate over the "Redskins" name in sports isn't just at the professional level.
Students at an Oklahoma City high school were refusing to go into Capitol Hill High School on Wednesday morning because their mascot no longer has the controversial name, according to CNN affiliate KOCO.
Dozens of students stood on the lawn outside the building rather than heading into class.
The city's public school board voted Monday to change the name in response to Native American students' feelings that the mascot name was offensive. The vote to change the mascot, which has been in place since the 1920s, was unanimous.
School administrators will immediately start phasing out the Redskins mascot and will create a committee of current and former students and community members to pick a new mascot before the end of the spring semester, spokeswoman Tierney Tinnin said in a statement, according to The Oklahoman.

Red Mesa (AZ) High School, which sits on the nation’s largest Native American reservation, is proud of its football team, named "The Redskins." The name was adopted by the school when one of its earliest students, Raymond Oldman, proposed it because he was a fan of the Washington Redskins.
To leftists, these aren't REAL Indians.

I would agree. Keep selling Redskins shirts...wear them to school and to games. Chant Redskins in the hallway as you walk from class to class. Put Redskins decals on your notebooks. Any game to take you down psychology in a class by teaching the terrible woes of saying Redskins....just start repeating the word in front of the teacher.

Hereabouts, there are two schools that have awful nicknames and mascots: Auks and Pandas. BTW, what do they need a mascot if the students continue there protest.

My own little K-12 school on Cape Cod proudly wore the name “Blue Devils” with a little blue demon with pitchfork as the mascot. Apparently the wiccans thought that this was demeaning, so the mascot of 100 years was changed to the “Sharks”. Not was bad as the change of the Dartmouth College Indians to the Big Green, but the wiccans are happy now. And apparently no one cares what the sharks think.
Change the name to the Gippers and see if anyone objects...
I think they should change the team to “The No Names”
Their mascot could be “Nothing”.
The story is the kids are UPSET about the name change. They ARE IN FAVOR OF BEING CALLED THE REDSKINS.
