A New York woman who claimed she was falsely arrested outside an Air National Guard base for taking photographs for a "Support Our Troops" website has been awarded $1.12 million in compensatory damages, her attorney said Friday...

I note that Long Island Newsday (http://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/nancy-geovese-of-east-quogue-labeled-terrorist-awarded-1-1m-in-damages-1.9706586) and other newspapers have conveniently omitted from their report of the jury verdict the part about her being targeted by the police because of her right wing views. Newsday did, however, point out that at the timne of her arret she had a shotgun, "assault rifle," and hundreds of rounds of ammo in her car.
Too bad the money will come from tax payers and not the prick in uniform.
Then why accept $1 million?
I carry more than that when I’m taking a trip to the range.
Was it illegal in her state at the time to have that in her car?
I find it extremely hard to believe that the National guard and cops would “target her because of her right wing views” or “make an example of her for other right wingers”. I live on Long Island and know a lot of a cops and friends in the military and not one of them are leftist. Something don’t jibe with this story.
The money should be paid by the Cop, but since it won’t and Taxpayers are on the hook, I propose a new Federal Law:
All Public Servants and Public Employees found Liable in any way for Violating the Civil Rights of another Human Being, shall be Prohibited from Using, Owning, Possessing, or having access to ANY Firearm or Ammunition.
Game Over
Right. It should have been millions more.
MY analysis is;
She's a weatherman underground type and was taking pictures for SOME nefarious purpose when arrested on suspicion of being a terrorist
A very slick lawyer developed the 'right wing' scenerio and bingo ... a cool mil
Yep especially since this happened out in Westhampton which is all rich leftists living out there. Just why was she all the way out there if she lives in Mineola? That’s a 2 hour drive. Sounds to me she’s a leftist who was protesting the military, could have been doing something very suspicious which got her arrested on terror charge and like you said her lawyer came up with this right wing abuse story which is a typical leftist stunt. Terror attack happens and right away they blame the Tea party.
For future reference, the military has a lot of Public Affairs Officers, who usually sit on their hands much of the day, so are more than happy to attend photo shoots. This saves a lot of heartburn, and turns what could be a suspicious event into a cheery one. They also give PAOs lots of handouts and other goodies to offer those they deal with.
She should get $10,000 at this most. Our legal system is so effed where vile people like her get huge paydays.
Guys have been unjustly tossed in prison for years. Their compensation is more on the order of $100-$1,000 per day
No, as long as the shotgun/”assault rife” were unloaded and in locked case or compartment out of reach of the occupants of the vehicle and the ammo is stored separately from the firearm or in a locked container. So-called assault rifes have been illegla in NY since at least the 1990s.
Note that if her firearms were illegal at the time of arrest, then she would have also been charged with a firearms related crime, rather than simple trespass and she would not have won her false arrest suit.
Because nothing else gets their attention.
She apparently drove from Mineola to Westhamptom for two reasons: First, this is the United State of America and believe it or not, the right to travel is still a right guaranteed by the Constitution. Second, the Long Island Shooting Range in the Town of Brookhaven, where she had been earlier that day, is the only public shooting range on Long Island. The Air National Guard base is located only a few miles from the shooting range, and if I recall correctly, the inactive helicopter that she photographed is (or was) clearly visible from the public roadway that runs by the base.
I also note that the distance from Mineola to the shooting range is about 45 miles and takes less than an hour; and the drive from Mineola to the air base is only slightly longer.
She was apparently taking the photographs from a public roadway near the base. The helicopter that she was photographing was “inactive” (meaning it was deocrative) and clearly visible from the public space. Indeed, the local justice court threw out the underlying trespass charge because she wasn’t trespassing when taking the photographs.
It sounds like this so called sheriff’s deputy has a problem with Americans. I wonder where the ___hole is from originally.
During her time in the Suffolk County jail, Brewington claimed Genovese was subjected to humiliation and was strip searched.
Four days in jail for a misdemeanor count for taking a picture of a helicopter...?
I remember reading about this when it happened...
Glad she got the money to send a message to these JBT's...
Are you her? Sounds like it. Yeah it’s 45 minutes if you speed and you’re lucky and hit no traffic. I live in Riverhead and just to drive to Ronkonkoma takes me an hour. Well I still don’t buy it, I think she is full of BS. There is not a cop or a vet I know who would act like a leftist the way they are saying “We’re going to make an example of you for other right wingers” That is such absolute crap. No, she had to be doing something else there. A good friend of mine is a Suffolk county cop and there is no way in hell he would ever arrest someone just for taking a photo of a chopper, and he sure as hell wouldn’t say “Im going to teach you right wingers a lesson”
Conspiracy theorist!!
