PG&E is reporting that 155,000 customers are without power in San Francisco after a massive storm hit Northern California early Thursday morning and fried a Civic Center substation.
Officials are preparing for the possibility of debris slides and tidal waves as a result of the storm. As much as 8 inches of rain could fall over 24 hours, and up to 2 feet of snow is expected to blanket Sierra Nevada ski resorts.
Heavy rain is long overdue in California, which has been suffering from one of its most severe droughts on record. The storm, which is the biggest to hit California in five years, is being called Pineapple Express.
Schools canceled classes and residents collected supplies Thursday morning as residents anticipated a storm with high winds and heavy rain, the Associated Press reported.

Oakland, where they use diesel-powered vibrators
Amazingly, we still have power here. I don’t expect that to last long as the wind is really kicking up and our power infrastructure is fragile.
The Weather Channel has some great pictures of 7 foot waves on the lake.
Should be an interesting next day or two
I’m watching webcams from Humboldt County, where the Fern River near Ferndale has gone from 4 feet to 8 feet deep in the last 12 hours, and is predicted to top out at 20 feet in the next 24. Man, that’s some heavy rainfall.
Now they do their perversions in the dark.
How can these Old Hippies tell ?
A substation here is where all the transformers are. After long periods of no rain dirt and dust builds up on them and as soon as it rains they ‘short’ out. Happens here all the time too. Every single time it rains when it hasn’t for awhile bam! our power goes out.

When did it become necessary for the media to assign a stupid name to every major weather event?
Shockingly birthrates will remain the same 9 months after this blackout.
