With the entire country seeing demonstrations following the Ferguson decision, Ive had colleagues and business partners ask me my thoughtsnot from my perspective as the chairman and CEO of a $55 billion organizationbut as a black man in America.
You would think my experience as a top executive would be different from a black man who is working in a retail or food-service job to support his family. Yet, he and I both understand the commonality of the black male experience that remains consistent no matter what the economic status or job title.
This piece is not to complain about what is, but instead offer hope that we can harness the positive energy from the demonstrations for change and start a new chapter in America based on better understanding of race relations.
As Americans, we must deal with behavior that is unacceptable in todays global world. The first step in changing negative behavior is to understand the underlying imagery of the black male, which doesnt represent reality. Whether its Michael Brown in Ferguson, Trayvon Martin with his Skittles, Eric Garner who died after a choke hold, or the 12-year-old killed because he was waving a toy gun, when you see a black man killed, the imagery is more complicated than one might think. For example, words used by the white police officer to describe Michael Brown included some such as hulking and demonwords that bring up images going back to the days of slavery....

sooo,
just coll your friendly cop, Hal?
I once had a real problem getting a taxi to pick me up at a 7-11 at night in a black neighborhood. (Long story.)
After waiting for over an hour I called back and told the dispatcher they’d have no problem recognizing the fare because I was the only white guy there.
Black cabbie pulled up in less than 5 minutes. He told me he would never pick up a black guy, and probably not young black women, in that neighborhood. Several cabbies had been murdered in the previous year, and it wasn’t white fares killing them.
Having lived for many years in several African nations and having a number of black African friends who are living in the USA who very much agree with you on this issue, I say
BINGO!
Funny way to get them there; I remember the rash of cabbie murders in NYC years ago. Not a job I would want at 3 am...
In nearby Newark NJ many pizzerias won’t even deliver in many areas; if the “looting class” shows up they pay at a window and take it with them...
Bernard is full of crap! We are frequently asked for ID at dining and at other stores. I also ALWAYS lock my car doors when I get in so that I am not carjacked in the Atlanta area. These racist, agitator creeps don’t understand that these experiences are shared by EVERYONE because of increasing crime rates brought on by the “I should get everything for free” crowd—white or black.
So...whose credit card was it?
I am buying my wife a new car soon precisely for the function that automatically locks the doors when you get in. Has absolutely nothing to do with race and everything to do with her safety in a dangerous world.
I always get asked for id and I always thank the person. I don’t want some thief using my card.
Call me a bigot, I’ve never been stung by a scorpion or mauled by a bear but I will damn sure be cautious if they are around me.
What positive energy would that be?
The Black community that demonstrates has done nothing but shoot itself in the foot. It is more alienated now that ever (and unfortunately, such alienation is well-deserved).
I get tired of this crap. Non other than Jesse Jackson said he was relieved when he heard footsteps following him to find out it was a white guy. These aren’t stereo types.....statistics say you are numerous times more likely to be scamed by a black than a white when one considers their % of the population. Damn right I avoid a cluster of black youths...I’m not stupid!!!
Coming soon-
Eating a sandwich... while black!
Watching TV... while black!
Washing the dishes... while black!
Taking a nap... while black!
Oh, for God’s sake, SHUT UP!
And yes, I am referring to tipping.
Permanent victims.
If he doesn’t like the perception that people have of black males, then perhaps he should work to change the behavior of black males.
Bottom line, black communities tolerate crime in their midst, and yet wonder why lawful people are wary of them, and wonder why the police treat them with caution.
Exactly. The thug black sub-culture has to go. If that means “acting white”, too bad because acting black is not working.
Successful men like this CEO would not dare explore the high racial crime rates behind the racial experience he has encountered. Whites can not be guilted out of believing their own eyes and ears rather than the lips flapping about the black race as a victim. It’s the other way around. Women, lock your car doors - don’t be a stupid victim.
Nothing will get better until Blacks stop cheering on sin and crime with lying excuses. They have to make being a criminal and acting thuggish taboo as it is in the white, Asian, and Hispanic sub-cultures.
The black sub-culture won’t change so I expect race relations to stay the same. One more thing, they blame whites for noticing the high rate and risk blacks pose to society but it is true of all races - including other blacks.
Congrats.
Thanx.
Still buy from him.
