A huge fire has destroyed an apartment building under construction in central Los Angeles, shutting two major cross-city freeways.
More than 250 firefighters tackled the overnight blaze in the downtown area, which was brought under control early on Monday.

The fire could be seen from miles away, but no cause has been identified.

Sections on the 110 and 101 freeways remained closed on Monday morning.

There is an Earth First type movement that encourages its members to torch new construction....

Happen to be on business here in LA area and drove right past it on the I-110 at 11Am here. A smoldering, stinky mess they were still hosing down. Must have been a big fireball at its peak. The other similar building still ok.
Could be, but I don’t think they were at the painting phase quite yet...and a lot of paints aren’t even flammable anymore. I think they’ve got to find another hypothesis.
LAFD does seem to think it was criminal, but perhaps that’s just because of its size and the fact that it all seemed to go up at once.
Yeah, I heard that. They torched a Hummer dealership a few years ago.
If the destroyed building was under construction when it burned, an applicable Builder's Risk policy would pay for the fire loss even if it was caused by arson - unless the insurer could proved that arson was committed by an insured.

I guess I should have been more specific.
It is usually the cabinet people who start the fires. Our department worked one a few years ago where they got it above the lower explosive limit and then decided it was time for a cigarette.
Smoking does kill.
Other times it is the rags that seem to cook off about midnight thru 2am.
At the pre-dried in stage, it is usually a cigarette blown up against fresh wood.
That will burn crazy fast and hot.
Yes, LA is one of the cities experiencing huge shortage of housing.
How many subsidized apartments were scheduled to be part of the complex? Maybe it was self-defense by a concerned citizen wanting to live to see a few more birthdays.
They had the south side completely open. On the northbound, the closed three lane and left three lanes open.
The LAFD was still spraying water. There was a lot of smoke ... You could see the destruction to the other buildings that were existing and not in construction.
I hurried through and hit up Trader Joe’s before dinner time. :o)
I read that there were and likely still are 250 firefighters on scene.

I did hear an older firefighter this morning say it was “an historic fire” ... Once in a lifetime. He said because of intensity, large area covered.
I turned south off the 101 Hollywood Fwy this morning and my jaw dropped. I saw the fire from Temple all the way down to LA Live ...STaples Center where the Lakers play. I was off in the size but it seemed gargantuan.
Im going to start a search for the most impressive photos of same.
