War Clouds on the Horizon?
National Review ^ | December 4, 2014 | Victor Davis Hanson

A large war is looming absent preventive American vigilance

The world is changing and becoming even more dangerous — in a way we’ve seen before.

In the decade before World War I, the near-hundred-year European peace that had followed the fall of Napoleon was taken for granted. Yet it abruptly imploded in 1914. Prior little wars in the Balkans had seemed to predict a much larger one on the horizon — and were ignored.

The exhausted Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires were spent forces unable to control nationalist movements in their provinces. The British Empire was fading. Imperial Germany was rising. Czarist Russia was beset with revolutionary rebellion. As power shifted, decline for some nations seemed like opportunity for others.

The same was true in 1939. The tragedy of the Versailles Treaty of 1919 was not that it had been too harsh. In fact, it was far milder than the terms Germany had imposed on a defeated Russia in 1918 or the requirements it had planned for France in 1914.

Instead, Versailles combined the worst of both worlds: harsh language without any means of enforcement.

The subsequent appeasement of Britain and France, the isolationism of the United States, and the collaboration of the Soviet Union with Nazi Germany green-lighted Hitler’s aggression — and another world war.

We are entering a similarly dangerous interlude. Collapsing oil prices — a good thing for most of the world — will make troublemakers like oil-exporting Iran and Russia take even more risks.

When you have time, read up on the final days and annihilation of the US Asiatic Fleet. Should bring tears to anyone's eyes.

I'm surprised no one has done a movie on the their story, its so compelling.

I shudder to think what WWIII would look like.

Look around. WWIV is the one you should be concerned about now.

That will be fought with sticks and rocks.

Yes, I meant the mainland, or other American interests. There are many modalities for attack. Nuclear, biological, and chemical as well as conventional. All can be delivered on missiles. Now we have cyber attacks that take out our power grid, our transportation system, commerce, and other infrastructure.

I too see war coming. I have for some time. We have become complacent—we have developed a case of “Bodybagaphobia” We want wars with no American deaths. Its OK to beat up 3rd world nations but what happens when we have a real war against powers equal to us? What happens in a war like that—US vs Russia/cuba/Iran Will England join us or sit back? What of Europe? My guess they will stand by and do zip. Maybe Canada may help us—but will Mexico? This time we could lose. Starvation will haunt the land. What will Americans do when they see our carriers roll over in flames taking thousands to Davy Jones Locker? What will happen with the grid down? The Internet gone, TV gone? We will come together but will it be too little, too late? I don’t think the USA will break up—but we may well lose Alaska and Hawaii and Guam, maybe even Purto Rico (to Cuba/Russia) Lose a few battles and China will turn on us for a place at the peace table and a cut of the pie. Maybe out of this conflict a new and better world will come.

You are so right. If it were not for my religious faith, I would be terrified right now.

All good — and frightful — points.

Mexico help us? Did you put that in there to make me chuckle in the midst of the gloom?

I do not see a good outcome. But I pray your final speculation comes to pass.

Not sure what you wanted me to see in the “Comments” section. I skimmed through quite a few and saw an encouraging bit of rational and well-informed discourse here and there interspersed with OWS rants and some Hannity-style rah-rah.

The OP linked the printer friendly version of the article which had no comments. The non-printer friendly version had the comments, which is why I linked it, just for the sake of letting FReepers see the comments, not because I wanted to call attention to a specific comment.

Okay, got it. Thanks.

PS: The printer-friendly version was better for me; whole lot of ads at the other link.

I’m talking about US policy. Russia seems to respond mostly to things closer to its sphere of influence.

Yea... I figured as much.

I think you have a slightly warped view of reality.

we fought Japan to keep Russia from having a two front war, too,..

So that whole "Day of Infamy" thing was just a scam to help the Russians?

YOU gotta listen to her speeches, and I am looking for her bookm but basically

everything you thought you knew

about American policy in WWII and why and where we fought

was to protect the soviets

to include when we invaded Europe, Russia wasn’t in germany yet until 44, so, we had to wait until they gained enough land to take over Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Check, Yugo...

Until then, if we invaded, peace may have been earlier

also, she speaks in detail of the internal German resistance against Hitler and how Roosevelt ignored it and through who, Harry Hopkins

fascinating videos

Harry Hopkins was also personally responsible for sending yellowcake to Russia in 1945, too

Manhattan project generals were unaware because the col who sent it got his orders straight from hopkins, thinking it was legit, so he kept his muth shut for 5 years

I am still waiting to see who the actual bad guys will be in this conflict. So far, we have seen no one wanting to fire the first shot. So, who will be the bad guy?

Frankly, I was expecting war to break out over ObamaCare alone. Yet, nothing. Apathy.
