Court to review Confederate flag on license plates [SCOTUS]
AP ^ | 12/05/2014 | Mark Sherman

The Supreme Court is taking on a free speech case over a proposed license plate in Texas that would feature the Confederate battle flag.

The case involves the government's ability to choose among the political messages it allows drivers to display on state-issued license plates.

The justices said Friday they will review a lower court ruling in favor of the Texas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The group is seeking a specialty plate with its logo bearing the battle flag, similar to plates issued by several other states that were part of the Confederacy.

The case will be argued in March.

A state motor vehicle board rejected the application because of concerns the Confederate flag would offend many Texans who believe the flag is a racially charged symbol of repression. But a panel of federal appeals court judges ruled that the board's decision violated the group's First Amendment rights.

Texas offers more than 350 specialty plates, the group said in its court filing. They include plates that say "Choose Life," ''God Bless Texas," ''Fight Terrorism," as well as others in support of Boy Scouts, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, blood donations, pro sports teams and colleges.

The state said in its Supreme Court appeal that the decision to reject the Sons of Confederate Veterans' license plate was not discrimination because the motor vehicle board had not approved a license plate expressing any view about the Confederacy or the battle flag.

Other federal appeals courts have come to differing conclusions on the issue, the state said.

LBJ, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George H. W. Bush, George Bush, Newt Gingrich, Jim Wright, Sam Rayburn, Robert Byrd, Trent Lott, and now Mitch McConnell.

I submit that Southerners had done just as much to screw this country up as Northerners have.

Bull Run is in Virginia. It is not in the “North”. At the time of Bull Run, General lee did not command a Confederate Army. The Confederate Army as Bull Run was led by General Beauregard. Lee would not assume command of a Confederate field army until June 1862.

t’s their business because the government of Texas is subservient to the government of the United States.

Only after 1865. Before that, as originally designed, the USA was a republic with the states having "numerous and indefinite" powers and the Federal few and specific powers. So LEARN history, please.

The dream team would be Confederate infantry and cavalry combined with Union artillery and quartermaster corp.

Funny thing, Lincoln went on record as saying the conflict was NOT about slavery. He was for slavery before he was against slavery.

I would disagree on one point. I believe Grand should be the Army Commander and Lee a Corp commander. Grant had, what I believe, is a better strategic capability the Lee.
the Vicksburg campaign and the relief of Chattanooga are examples of Grant’s strategic thinking. General lee’s tactical skill in handling the ANV. is exceptional, his strategic employment for that fabled army is problematic.
The Gettysburg campaign was an unmitigated disaster for the ANV. It’s offensive power was seriously damaged to the point that it incapable of offensive action for almost nine months after Meade defeated it at Gettysburg.

Actually not. Our government changed from a confederation to a nation bound by a constitution as a result of the 2nd Constitutional Congress and the ratification of the US Constitution. Our government operates on a concept known as dual sovereignty with the federal government superior to individual states. You are correct the the individual states still maintain a level of sovereignty.

"The dream team would be Confederate infantry and cavalry combined with Union artillery and quartermaster corp"

Well, I had originally thought of that, but then I remembered Union infantry units like the Iron Brigade or the Irish Brigade, and also to remember some of the Confederate artillery units, mainly horse artillery, and I felt that I just had to lump them all together.

Confederate infantry was impressive throughout the war, but look at the Union infantry this way: they were constantly being defeated in Virginia and yet maintained their morale to the extent that they kept coming back and coming back until they finally got the Commanders that they deserved for their efforts.

Think of the stand-up fight between the yet-unnamed Iron Brigade and the Stonewall Brigade at Brawner's Farm. Diamond against diamond.

What killed the Confederate Army was the totally corrupt quartermaster corp. The only thing they got right was ammunition.

I guess it’s a good thing you don’t live in Virginia, then, because the sons of confederacy already have s plate here.

>>I submit that Southerners had done just as much to screw this country up as Northerners have.<<

Yep, there’s been some duds for sure. Most have been from the Northeast and or West coast. Do have to admit, Sheila Jackson Lee is from Texas and she is the dumbest damn politician ever known to man...I mean this woman with the crown weave hairdo is an embarrassment.

By the way, Newt Gingrich was born in Pennsylvania, Baby Bush born in New Haven Conn., The old man Bush born in Milton Massachusetts. All three transplants.
