Imagine that Eric Garner had been white. Imagine that he’d been living in Idaho. Imagine that the law-enforcement officers who killed him had been federal agents.
His death would be a Tea Party crusade.
Think about it. The police hassled Garner because he had a history of selling untaxed cigarettes. It’s the kind of big-government intrusion that drives Tea Partiers nuts. One of the events that helped launch the Tea Party, in fact, came in January 2009, when activists from Young Americans for Liberty donned American Indian garb to protest the soda taxes proposed by then-New York Governor David Patterson.
Garner responded to being hassled with a statement of “don’t tread on me” anti-government defiance: “I was just minding my own business. Every time you see me you want to mess with me. I’m tired of it. It stops today!” A tussle ensued. The police put Garner in a chokehold, and he died.
The Garner case bears some resemblance to that of Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher who this spring prevented Bureau of Land Management agents from impounding his cattle after he refused to pay government grazing fees. Like Garner, Bundy was engaged in a form of commerce he believed the government should not tax. Like Garner, Bundy resisted law enforcement’s efforts to punish him for it. For many conservatives, this made Bundy a hero and the government that sought to penalize him a tyranny. Right-wing activists, including some Republican legislators, flocked to Bundy’s ranch as he stared down federal agents, and Nevada Senator Dean Heller dubbed these vigilantes “patriots.” “At the heart of this issue,” declared Fox’s Sean Hannity, is “my belief that our government is simply out of control.”

What a crock. Cops kill way more whites than blacks. If he were white, it wouldn’t even make the evening news.
He died because he had the sickle cell gene, which causes that sort of choking maneuver to have a high fatality rate, causing that sort of choke hold to be banned by most departments. The intent is to take down, not kill, but the result is death.
Rush Limbaugh went off on the stupidity of sending a half-dozen cops to roust some jamoke for selling single cigarettes. So did Greg Gutfeld on “The Five”. And Limbaugh also pointed out that nobody seemed bothered that apparently deBlasio’s NYC regime has decided to crack down hard on black market smokes.
The difference is neither started with a default position of victimology; neither said anything that could remotely be considered a justification of rioting; and both recognized that nothing would’ve happened if the perp hadn’t insisted on resisting arrest.
But I guess the pinheads at the Atlantic were just distracted by all the TeaParty-inspired rioting we’ve seen over the past half-decade.
This is a straw man argument being used by O’Reilly and Fox talking heads too, allowing them to appear moderate, while insinuating that conservatives are on the side of the cop. I dont know any conservative who believes what the cop did was appropriate. Maybe some ex cops on Fox but that’s it.
Most on the right think it is an issue of police overreach and the unintended consequences of big government (high taxed cigs). But it’s been hijacked by the race hustlers so its become an issue of racism. And conservatives are on the sidelines now basically watching the clown show led by Obama and Sharpton.
Does he really think that tea party would be burning down businesses, looting and hammering people to death? These are the methods of blacks and other liberals not the Tea Party.
Tea Party people are decent and law abiding. Comparing them to the dregs of society is just wrong.

Good to hear. I will add that there’s quite a bit of disagreement between conservatives about the actions of the police as one can see right here on FR. However, the idea that we’d be rallying around Eric Garner as some kind of Clive Bundy figure if he were white, as Beinart is attempting to claim, is nonsense.
I've decided to adopt the black/liberal reasoning in cases like this, based entirely on skin color and since I am a "privileged" white man, if he's white, he's innocent and pure as the driven snow, if he's black, hang him high.
The death would have never been heard about. This is just another racist liberal.

No, the story about his death would not be printed anywhere in the New York Times, never mind on the first page. The Tea Party wouldn't even put down their collective coffee cup hearing about it.
"Morbidly obese uncolored man dies while resisting arrest" is a headline that will never be printed. It doesn't matter if the arrest was for selling untaxed cigarettes or unpaid parking tickets. Statistically, uncolored people are much less likely to do stuff that will get them arrested, and much less likely to resist arrest if they are arrested.
If Garner was white, or the cop black, we’d never have heard their names. Racial injustice is currently, by practical definition, only when certain racial identities are aligned. Like everything the liberals touch, it’s about politics to the absolute exclusion of everything else.
Mark Levin says that the cop that instructed this was a black female sergeant. She was the one in charge. No news outlet is reporting this.
