Well it starts by obeying the law.
I once had a cop point his gun at me.
It was the result of stupidity on my part, followed by an extreme over-reaction on the part of the officer. By staying calm, and following the officer’s instructions, I was able to defuse the situation and did not even end up in custody.
I will say this, though: The business end of a .38 revolver appears to be the size of a cannon barrel when it’s pointed directly at you (at least to me, it did).
This is almost word for word what I always tell people.
In fact, they should give a class that covers this to EVERY inner city school child in America!
“Sir” denotes respect, respect is earned, not given freely. I do usually say “sir” to men who are obviously much older than I am.
At 69 years old there aren’t a whole lot of those guys around.
Good advise. I would add; if you have a CHL voluntarily show it along with your DL and if carrying a gun, either on your body or somewhere in your vehicle, inform the cop that you have a gun and also volunteer where it is located. However, always keep both hands on the wheel and do NOT attempt to show the gun. Although in texas (I live in Texas - God Bless Texas) if you’re a CHL holder you’re not required to show your CHL even if packing unless asked Besides, the Cop already knows this before he/she walks up to your vehicle as its in your DB which he/she more than likely pulled up before coming to your car. And, usually you will be thanked for volunteering the info. Shows you’re one of the good guys and puts the cop at ease.
Cops LOVE to be called ‘SIR’ and they love your deference and respectful attitude.
Why not... he has a gun, a badge and a uniform for a reason... to protect ME.
Part of the “urban” underclass culture is hating the police. To them, the police are the unjust, unfair White establishment. They are taught to hate the police.
It’s not “profiling.” It’s thugs acting like thugs.
Don't be a 12 year old with a BB gun. Don't walk into stairwells with your girlfriend. Don't answer the door with a Wii controller in your hand. Don't walk through Walmart with a BB rifle over your shoulder. Don't sell cigarettes on street corners. Don't reach for your cane in the bed of your pickup truck. Don't reach for your wallet. Don't try and drive away from plain clothed police officers who don't identify themselves. Don't drive around in cars that are not the same make and color as the one a murder suspect is believed to be driving.
I had a gun pointed at me after being vehicularly profiled. I was pulled over by a trooper on a highway (I assumed for speeding) and he approached the car while I was looking for my license. When I looked up there was a revolver in my face. Turns out my car matched the description of a car used in an armed robbery. Things diffused considerably when he saw I was traveling with my wife and that there was a baby in a car-seat.
My father’s wisdom (and he would have known, but that’s another story for another time): There are only two sorts of people you should never argue with, a cop and a judge.
If Mike Brown were at work, or at school, or doing something productive around the house, he would most likely not have been shot.
If you place yourself in bad situations, bad things, sometimes tragic things happen.
Police Officer: 'if you don’t want to get shot...just do what I tell you.'

At the same time, every day approx. twenty black males are shot and killed by other black males. And about once a day one small black child is killed by stray bullets coming from the gun of a black male. The vultures don't descend on those cases. Now why is that?
Many years ago I was pulled over by a NY state trooper for speeding who chewed me out for immediately pulling over where there was limited area to stop. A week later another trooper lit my car up. I turned on my right blinker and drove three hundreds yards where I could safely pull over. The female trooper had her gun half drawn and was screaming at me why didn’t I immediately pull over. Also its bad advice to immediately get your drivers license when pulled over. Keep your hands on the steering wheel and wait for him to approach. When asked for the license then tell him you are retrieving it from wherever.
“...When a cop is pulling you over, thats the time to be as polite and non-threatening as possible. Why? Because that cop has a gun, he can arrest you and you have no idea whats going through his head. Maybe someone who looks like you just committed a crime in the area. Maybe one of his buddies got shot on a traffic stop last week and hes nervous about it. Maybe you just look a little bit like Dave Chappelle and he never forgave him for quitting his show. It doesnt really matter. If you think a cop needs to be taken down a peg or two, thats a job for your lawyer to handle in a court room full of people, not a job for you to handle when its your word against his.”
If you disagree with the reason a cop pulled you over, it’s best to quarrel with him on the street — with your counter-argument laced with profanities — right then and there rather than waiting until the case comes to court and calmly discrediting him with evidence to the contrary and according to the law as it is written
It was obvious that I was about to get a ticket; I pulled over to the side of the freeway.
Well, pulling to the side rather than the center angered the cop. His exact words were "That's a good way to get yourself shot".
I told him that it was my training to pull over to the side for officer safety.
I should have said "If you fire into my vehicle with my wife and child in it I will do my best to shoot you back and hopefully remove the threat to my family."
Mesquite, TX: Don't ever go there. There is a rogue cop willing shoot people for pulling over in the unapproved manner.
This is what occurred that day. it is cooberated by seven eye witnesses and the Police Officer's report. Most of the witnesses are African-American themselves.
The big strong Micael Borwn committred multiple crimes and was willing to assault and injure the officer in order to not get caught and apprehended. In the end, he was going to attack and seriously injure or kill that officer.
Michael Brwon was acriminal thug who reaped the direct consequences of his own actions. Plain and simple, and it does not matter what color he was.
The officeer acted approriately...even herocilally IMHO...and the grand jury, once they saw the evidence, made the only rational and just decision they could...NO BILL...no charges.
Liberal activists, race baiters, progressive liberals, and their politicans want to turn this into a race issue...but it never was.
Those people inciting these riots, IMHO, including the US Attorney General and the President, should themselves be charged with inciting the looting, arson, assault, and murder that have occurred as a result of their false narratives.
LOL! How naive! Tell that to the little girl who was shot by a SWAT team member in a story we were reading about just today.
Charges Dropped For Cop Who Fatally Shot Sleeping 7-Year-Old Girl
Of course, the cops did have a reason which was deemed sufficient to totally exonerate the fool who pulled the trigger.
There's always a reason whenever things go bad.
Believe it or not, there are actually more examples.
Want to know how not to get shot by cops? Do everything you said in your article above, and then pray for a big helping of good luck on top of that.
