A 60-year-old man found shot to death in the Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve was a longtime writer, editor and English teacher who loved to hike in the Oakland hills park, his wife said Wednesday. David Robert Ruenzel of Oakland was found on a park trail by a woman who had reported hearing gunshots about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the East Bay Regional Park Police Department. Investigators said they were looking into whether Ruenzel had been killed during a robbery....He was also an award-winning writer and editor at Teacher Magazine. Most recently, Ruenzel worked at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which issued a statement Wednesday calling him a beloved educator, talented writer and valued partner in our work. He will be missed greatly. Ruenzel was shot at least twice, apparently where he was found, said park police. Officers found shell casings at the scene. No arrests have been made, but police said witnesses had seen two men on the trail just before three gunshots rang out. Police said the two were persons of interest. One was described as a black or of mixed race, in his late 20s or early 30s, thin, with dreadlocks, high cheekbones and a narrow face, wearing dark clothes. The second was an out of shape black man, 6 feet tall and 240 pounds, clean-shaven and with short hair, wearing dark clothes and a black backpack, police said. Investigators said he was described as overly friendly.

They actually provided descriptions? Isn’t that against any number of journalistic rules?
Another “Whitey” shot for no reason. It won’t be long and we will begin seeing the same but only the victims will be blacks. This is going to get way out of control.
Its sad.
Reminds me why I left the big city for the small town and have never looked back.
Peace, serenity, safety - these are things money can’t buy.
I’m glad my life won’t be cut short by some ruthless thug because I happened to be outdoors at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Apparently, there are some feral animals with guns on them hiking trails.
Thanks goodness he didn’t wrest the weapon from Obamas sons and take their lives. He recognized his white privilege and paid reparations, layed down and died. /S
Nothing says “overly friendly” like shooting people in a park.
I’m NOT your Huckleberry.
They shot a white guy. I guess I’m going to have to burn down my neighbor’s house.
holder is on it
No wonder they had to kill him; this guy looks like he could rip them limb from limb with his bare hands.
Living in Los Angeles I’m so glad that nothing like that could ever happen here.
Round up the usual NRA member suspects.
I always carry when I’m hiking, walking the dog, etc.
Uh-oh, they shot a liberal. How will the liberals slant that? Oh, I know: The evil gun did it! Ban guns!
Depends on demographics, not the size of the town. I'd rather live in San Jose with a population of about 1M vs E St Louis, population 25K.
Persons of interest may be witnesses as well as suspects; that's how they got away with describing them.
Looks like the Knock-out game has new rules.
It is actually a little surprising to see some stray from their cement kingdom.
This David Ruenzel character wrote magazine features for the Southern Poverty Law Center's 'Tolerance.org' project and worked for the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. He was gay, an Oakland educator, and worked to institute 'Common Core'.
I bet one of the last things that went through his mind was that he wished he had a gun.
