CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - On Tuesday around 3 p.m., protesters filled Public Square in response to the recent killing of 12-year-old Cleveland boy Tamir Rice and the lack of an indictment in Ferguson, MO.
The growing crowd then walked onto the shoreway, blocking traffic between West 3rd and East 9th Streets. The group is chanting "Hands up! Don't shoot!" They also chanted "No justice! No peace!" and "Whose streets? Our streets!"Chief of Police Calvin Williams is on the scene with multiple units responding.
"People need to remain calm and be peaceful," said Williams.
Protesters have a united front, encouraging others to "link up and stay late." Cleveland Police are along the perimeter, letting it play out. Police have called in a sheriff's bus, among other units, in case of mass arrests.
There is no word yet from the police chief about how long they will let this continue or what the plan is, if any exists. At this time, they are asking drivers to remain in their vehicles as they work to move through the protests.
Around 5:30 p.m., protesters starting leaving the shoreway after blocking traffic for more than an hour. It appears they are headed back to Public Square. Many vehicles stuck in traffic are beeping their support. 19 Action News reporter Dawn Kendrick says the protest is more organized, but still chaotic. Many out-of-towners are involved.
Councilman Zach Reed believes this makes a great teaching moment, emphasizing how people need to obey police orders, such as putting their hands up.
"Young people need to respect police officers," said Reed.
Reed has been a supporter of body cameras for police. He believes every officer should be wearing one.
Rice was shot at Cudell Recreation Center this past weekend by a Cleveland police officer. Rice had a BB gun that had the orange safety indicator removed.

Prayers to the innocent, decent, and law-abiding people tragically caught in the midst of this danger.
I heard the cop was white. True? I think we’d have heard more about it if he was indeed white.
I believe the officer was white. I honestly wasn’t paying much attention - plenty of violence on that side of town on a regular basis. Just happened that the shooter was a cop instead of a fellow thug this time.
I’m noticing that these “protests” are only in the hundreds or less. Saw one today on Shep’s Fox in which the crowd surrounding the girls — who were on their bellies, then standing, and then going through their cheerleader chant — the crowd was mainly photographers, and they had zoomed in on just that 2 dozen or so total small group. But it was a “protest”.
In other words, this is government + media driven. They held off for forever until a lame duck session to announce a grand jury non-indictement.
Why?
To make amnesty and emperor easier to swallow? Because they know race relations captivates Americans who will then forget everything else?
Or is there something else more sinister being done right now that we’re not catching? Iran, Ukraine, ???
My money’s on their putting amnesty on the back page.
Chimping out...film at 11.
I would hardly call it “silly”.
Who was the numbnut that thought an orange safety indicator was a good idea? What's to stop somebody from putting on orange indicator on a real gun?
It’s pretty darned cold in Cleveland tonight.
The news is reporting that the protesters blocked a major interstate this evening - they’re currently blocking some of the main streets out of town during rush hour.
Supposedly the reason is to “make themselves heard”. Because all previous attempts to voice their repetitive chants have been crushed? By who? Maybe it’s because people have stopped listening since black-on-black crime is ignored while legal, justified, white cops shooting black thugs, which is dwarfed by the former, is blown out of all proportion.
Most of the crowd shown on TV are white college kids.
To have the riot happen after the election.
I just heard on the radio news that there were protesters-4-Ferguson who tried to block the street near the Fayetteville, Arkansas, police station.
All 3 were handcuffed and removed.
So far no street puppets.
LOL!
Fire hoses. Mist setting. Free tuition for the college kids for this lesson.
“Whose streets? Our streets!”
For some reason, this phrase is particularly irksome to me. It just shows ignorance on many levels.
Nothing.
But its rarely if ever done.
There isn’t much point in doing that.
The use case for a real gun very rarely would benefit from such a ruse.
A toy gun however can be made to look like a real one, if one wants to use it to threaten people, or even if one wants to make it look more impressive, if one’s friends are impressed by such things.
We have a black mayor and a black police chief. A good number of the city council is black.
Yet we’re supposed to believe they preside over a police force full of killer white cops just itching to gun down innocent black children?
If so, it demonstrates near total impotence of black leadership.
“Watch Live” in this headline means,
“Hurry down here because we want a
riot, too!”
