Marion S. Barry, Jr., the sharecropper's son and civil rights activist who became Washington, D.C.'s most flamboyant and divisive mayor for four terms, died early Sunday at the age of 78.
United Medical Center spokeswoman Natalie Williams said Mr. Barry arrived at the hospital around 12:30 a.m. and died at 1:46 a.m., following a brief stay at Howard University Hospital. No cause of death was given, but Barry had suffered many health problems over the years, including prostate cancer, diabetes, anemia and kidney ailments.
Among Washington's poorest residents, Barry was viewed as a symbol of hope for the attention he gave to poverty, often giving jobsand sometimes cashto the people who needed it most. His critics, however, complained of a level of cronyism that almost bankrupted the city.
On a national scale, Barry will likely be remembered for his 1990 arrest for smoking crack in a hotel room with a young woman, a video of which was widely distributed throughout the media. He was sentenced to six months in prison for the violation.

Wow - I was really hoping he would have a part in the upcoming “Sharknado DC” - guess ‘tis not to be.
Barry might have a relative somewhere.
Interesting that this comes up now. His story of corruption was the beginning of the end for this country IMO. Back when he was first accused, I was shocked that the voters would re-elect him. And they didn't just re-elect him once but multiple times. It was clear that the voters didn't take this kind of corruption seriously. It was an eye opener for me.
Let God decide who goes to hell or not. The thief on the cross deserved hell but he was saved at the end by the magnificent salvation of the Lord. Marion Barry was a sucky mayor and rotten but I do hope he makes it into heaven.
Farewell to a racist, no good jive azzed street corner hustler. Took D.C. well into the toilet.
"You can keep your healthcare"
Bury Barry....
Sad. Because it doesn’t bode well for this country and I don’t think that it has always been this way.
News of Marion Barry's death was quickly followed by announcement telling DC Ward 8 residents that Barry's Annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Give Away would proceed with thousands of turkeys being handed out.
Here's an older ticket.
I heard the new mayor was planning to include Barry on her transition team.
I guess that’s not going to happen.
Oh well... That’s that.
Prayers for his family and his soul.
That’s about as kind as I’ll be.
When they cremate him, everyone within a five-mile radius is going to get a contact high.
You mean they actually have to show an ID to get a turkey? What a concept!
No more Snowflakes
Wow is that real? Words fail me. How is that even legal?
Oh that’s unconstitutional. It violates my right to free poultry.
Hillary!: “I’m sorry, I don’t recall”; “What difference, at this point, does it make?”
Hussein: “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan. Period.”
Bill: “I did not have sexual relations with that woman...Miss Lewinsky.”
Wonder where Barry got the money for this extravagant freebie. Extortion? Siphoning money from, say, the roads and bridges budget allocation?
It sounds like a decent effort — compelling the parents to take an interest in their children’s schooling, but I’ll bet most of the recipients failed to meet the requirements, yet were given a turkey anyway.
No cause of death?
Methinks nose candy.
