A rookie New York City police officer shot and killed an unarmed 28-year-old man in a darkened stairwell in Brooklyn late Thursday night, according to the police.
Police Commissioner William J. Bratton said that the victim, Akai Gurley, was a total innocent and called the shooting an unfortunate accident.
He was not engaged in any activity other than trying to walk down the stairs, Mr. Bratton said.
Mayor Bill de Blasio was also quick to offer his condolences to Mr. Gurleys family. This is a tragedy, he said.
The officer who shot Mr. Gurley, Peter Liang, has been on the force for less than 18 months and was still on probationary status.

Darkened stairwell is a bad scenario.
The Cop will walk even if the victim was innocent.
First rule of guns.
Know what you are shooting at.
They should declare that he failed his probation.
Otherwise, what is a probationary period for ?
Sad scenario for all involved.
point your gun at the ground until you need to use it
never point a gun at something you don’t want to shoot
do not put your finger on the trigger until a threat is recognized
Any one of these rules could have prevented the accident.
Sad?
How about criminal?
Liang appears to be Asian. No racial angle, no one will care.
True. Rookie mistake.
Unless you're a cop. Then it's OK to just open fire. Need to make sure that you get home at the end of your shift.
This is not an Accident. Unless the Gun fired ALL BY Itself It is RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT!!
He is screwed but alive.
Which begs the questions:
Was he a product of lowered standards to get a minority officer
Did they give this guy a number of passes prior to this
Had his partner raised concerns prior to this, to no avail
Was he truly fit to be an officer
Was he scared to death at the time of the accidental shooting
Did he receive proper training
Did he apply himself and learn the material presented
Particularly for the poor joker that got killed for just walking downstairs.
Yes. This should never have happened.
All good questions.
Video shows trooper shooting unarmed man, South Carolina police say
( But Sean Groubert, who has since been fired for the incident, has been charged with aggravated assault and battery, a felony that could get him up to 20 years in prison if convicted, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said Wednesday. )
But that's not what happened in Furguson with that Thug Michael Brown.
DiBlasio’s fault.
Agreed, I have been in similar scenarios where some joker is in my gated yard in the dark in the middle of the night banging on my window.
You do not just blast away.
One was an idiot friend, another was a stranger.
Both drunk.
