Gov. Paul LePages administration is facing a potential loss of federal funding to administer its food stamp program over concerns about states decision to put photos on cards used to access the benefits.
Federal officials said in a letter to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday that recipients are being given information that makes it seem like theyre required to have their photos placed electronic benefit transfer cards, even though the program is voluntary.
The Republican governors administration must make it clear to recipients that their decision to not have their photo placed on the card wont affect their benefits, said Kurt Messner, Northeast regional administrator for the U.S. Department of Agricultures Food and Nutrition Service.

Having a photo on the card would be racist.
Memo to the next House and Senate: Make it a requirement in ALL states!
Speak up, Republicans! Act like you are in the majority not a bunch of wimpering, simpering fools that can be rolled over by a bad look.
What, wouldn’t an executive order by the governor be good enough? It works for Obola.
If the cards have photos on them then how will you be able to sell them or even loan them out to friends while you are vacationing overseas?
Is there a statutory justification for denying funding because of these photos, or is this one of those “as the secretary shall determine” deals which amounts to legislation by petty bureaucrat?
I like this guy LePage, standing up to these fed bullies, for common sense policies. More governors ought to be like him.
Whatever they miss in Fed funding they’ll make up in reduced FRAUD.
What’s the downside?
1) Insist on picture IDs,
2) lose the federal funding,
3) stop the handouts (cause you got no money), and
4) your deadbeat class leaves (probably for the People’s Republic of MA)
Hopefully, LePage has the b@ll$ to stand up for what is right and lead Maine into the light.
Corrected headline: “Federal Government losing a strong-arm tactic in Maine!”
That’s right; lose the funding, and your gibsmedats.
LePage sounds awesome
Applying for food stamps is voluntary. So what’s the problem ?
We wouldn’t want food stamp benefit fraud to continue...would we?
Massachusetts already does this.
LePage is awesome. We are so proud of him as he fights back at the leftist elitist who have Maine in a headlock.
