Japan's economy is in trouble. The latest GDP figures unexpectedly show it to be in recession. In the long term, this is largely a story about demographics, and Japan is fighting an uphill battle.
One-fourth of Japan's population is older than 65, and that number isn't going down anytime soon. That means a shrinking percentage of the population is working. Meanwhile, a growing percentage of the population is receiving benefits, living on a fixed income, and being supported by that shrinking population of workers.
No amount of loose monetary or fiscal policy will bring more working-age people into the economy overnight.

I was on a crew of fiber-optic field engineers testing the installation at the new NSA complex about 5 years ago. On a crew of 8 I was only the fourth oldest at 62.
Oh, of course, you are absolutely correct.
We have flushed 57 million natural born Americans down the toilet, so now we have get cheap import labor???
This is the liberals fault, they let nothing get in the way of their evil doings.
Japan sure hasn’t had it easy since the height of the mid to late 80’s Evil Corporate Japan Taking Over the World movies.
“Perhaps the positive effects of immigration (both legal and illegal) outweigh the negatives, big picture wise. I see the solution to illegal immigration as one of mitigation rather than draconian prohibition.”
Depends on which big picture you are seeing. If the end result is one where laws don’t matter, the Constitution is trampled, our culture and history are replaced by those of the third world mob mentality, increased fascism, more ignorance than we even have now in our public schools, more national debt because the invaders consume more tax dollars than they pay in, even lower education standards because the culture of those streaming across the border unchecked do not value academics - I’d just as soon not be around to see it.
“Doing that will give us a competitive advantage, especially in the tech sector. “
Especially considering the majority of those getting masters degrees in OUR universities are foreign students. Our home grown kids are not learning what they need to in our public schools.
“What advantage is there to import millions of people into a country?”
So they’ll vote for more liberals and use more resources, advancing the Cloward-Pivan strategy.
It has NOTHING to do with helping the country, but to do with hastening our demise. Importing poverty and ignorance and lawlessness never helped a country.
“If its such a big problem then why arent people migrating to countries with lower median ages?”
Wow, I love it when someone interjects rational thought into the conversation out of the blue!
“I work in technology and I am sick and tired of being targeted by free trade gloBULLists and the H1B program is an abomination. Its all fun and games until it is your livelihood being targeted.”
It’s never fun to watch anyone lose their jobs. I hope we don’t have the mentality here of ‘First they came for the engineers...’ here. I change my opinion now on this, but i don’t know how we educate the next crop of students with the abysmal failure our schools are.
I follow Jesus Christ. No one and no thing else
They do have a big STD problem. STD (Sayonara To Dating) is the problem.
We need government policies that discourage unmarried teen motherhood. In Illannoy you get money for every kid the first through the fourteenth get you paid the same.
