Japan's economy is in trouble. The latest GDP figures unexpectedly show it to be in recession. In the long term, this is largely a story about demographics, and Japan is fighting an uphill battle.
One-fourth of Japan's population is older than 65, and that number isn't going down anytime soon. That means a shrinking percentage of the population is working. Meanwhile, a growing percentage of the population is receiving benefits, living on a fixed income, and being supported by that shrinking population of workers.
No amount of loose monetary or fiscal policy will bring more working-age people into the economy overnight.

Not sure I see anything wrong with a stable or even declining population.
With technology fewer workers produce more today than in the past.
Therefore, there are fewer people to share the gross national product of a country.
What advantage is there to import millions of people into a country?
Almost all countries currently have excess workers. Importing more people only adds to the unemployment problem, not to mention the social problems that come with imported people.
What next... my ssn? :)
The advantage, if you're a member of the governmental elite, is that you can alter the average acceptance of government by massively importing from countries that have more acceptance of government — IOW, you could fundamentally transform
the American Spirit by importing in people who are expectant of government overreach, corruption, etc until the latter are the norm rather than the Natural Born American.
OK let’s say you have a son and he was a fireman. Call him and tell him that we, as a nation, think firemen make too much and we don’t really like paying all of this money. There must be a shortage of firemen. So we need a legal immigration program to let in 500,000 fireman into the country every year from all over the world. This is good good for the country, don’t you know. Just suck it up, maybe retrain yourself.
Thanks. In other words there seems to be little advantage for the typical American citizen to import millions of people.
Is the only advantage for the “political elite” who like to make big government even bigger?
Your statement is totally unrelated to my point.
Like I always said , THE DAY THERE IS A LEGAL IMMIGRATION H1B TYPE PROGRAM TO IMPORT LAWYERS AND JOURNALISTS THAT IS THE DAY THE LEGAL IMMIGRATION STOPS.
No; since they're typically imported from countries where corruption is an accepted way of life, they won't have to fear being "found out" on bribes and such.
Also, increasing the number makes the de facto invasion more and more permanent: the official numbers for illegal immigrants is 11.7 million (of a 316.1 Million population). The real number is likely closer to 3 times as many (35.1:316.1 ≈ 11%).
Another reason to import them is because they're used to much lower wages; which means that they'll accept lower-pay for the same jobs. (And because they're illegal, they can be extorted by their employers who rely on that acceptance-of-corruption to dissuade the workers from reporting them.) — There's a few more reasons, but really money and power
boils pretty much all of them down.
I used to think you were a rational individual. Thanks for going on record.
THIS IS NOT ONLY A JAPANESE PROBLEM. IT’s A PROBLEM BEING FACED BY MANY OTHER INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES...
...
If it’s such a big problem then why aren’t people migrating to countries with lower median ages?
I work in technology and I am sick and tired of being targeted by free trade gloBULLists and the H1B program is an abomination. It’s all fun and games until it is your livelihood being targeted.
What counts is not the median age of the population.
What counts is "taxpayers" versus "tax consumers". Bringing in young people who will not earn enough to be net taxpayers actually makes the problem worse.
We need for the middle-class to be having more kids per couple, and for the underclass to stop having kids they cannot feed without government subsidy.
Oh but wait, CVA wants to shut the country 100% shut. Geeez. Good thing your ideas weren't around to to keep German engineers from coming over here after World War 2.
THe H1B quota is 65,000 per year and has been going on for 25 years. So when is enough?
I am not saying to bring in the masses. Just the utmost most talented. Wouldn't our indigent tech sector prosper by collaborating with innovators? Everyone wins.
Take it to zero, and replace with a program that only lets the applying innovators in, like I mentioned earlier.
Unfortunately the USA doesn't have a program like that....
And I agree. I am not trying to be contrarian, but our country (though sinking) is still the preferred citizenship destination spot in the world. Let's use that fact to our advantage, not our detriment.
Your idea of limiting people imports to only the very most educated and talented works until the politicians get a hold of the rulemaking.
Soon the chicken feather plucking industry will demand people be allowed in from North Korea since the very best chicken pluckers are from that country.
All sorts of Americans have a need to import people and that is why we have the mess we have.
We are importing millions of people each year and yet we have around 100 million people capable of working who are not working.
The mess was created by our politicians, both democrat and republican, and since they created the mess it is doubtful they will fix their mess.
Excellent graphics!
