The White House has been debating the timing of an announcement on the president's executive action on immigration reform, press secretary Josh Earnest acknowledged Tuesday.
Earnest said the president likely would not allow Capitol Hill considerations to weigh heavily on the timing of his announcement because Republicans have signaled a willingness to pre-emptively defund executive action.
"This is something that has been discussed at the White House," Earnest said.
Earnest acknowledged that some think "Republicans are less likely to attach some kind of rider that would defund any of the presidents actions if the White House waits until after Congress passes a continuing resolution (CR) or omnibus bill to fund the government.
But he said the issue could be argued "both ways."
"My sense is that even if the president doesnt announce anything until late in December, that will not prevent Republicans from pre-emptively trying to attach to the CR or an omnibus bill a proposal to make the implementation of that executive action harder," Earnest said.
Last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said the president should wait to make an announcement because of concern it could impact legislative work on a budget deal.
The president has said he's going to do the executive action. The question is when. It's up to him," Reid said, according to Reuters. "But I'd like to get the finances of this country out of the way before he does it."
But in an interview airing Monday, Reid appeared to backtrack, saying he believed "is should be done now."
Earnest said he did not have "any additional updates as it relates to timing," but that reviewing proposals for executive actions were "something thats on his agenda this week."
The White House also indicated that it would not "view very favorably" any "unwarranted" Republican efforts to attach measures undercutting executive action to a spending bill, although it stopped short of an explicit veto threat.
"Its hard to render a particularly definitive judgment on those kinds of proposals, because they havent been put forward yet," Earnest said. "But I think, as a general matter, as it relates to the immigration reform decision that rests on the presidents desk, that the president is confident that whatever action he will take will be within the confines of the law."
Which Friday afternoon news dump to utilize?
What if Obama comes out with his immigration fiat at the same time the Ferguson grand jury announces its decision? That could get weird.
The petulant child lashes out.
Remind me again who lost the election....
Do it while Ferguson is burning a real smoke screen. ;-)
The other timing issue is Ferguson.
Seems to me there is no hour of the day that would suffice to maximize looting (which is what Just-us wants). But, even if adults were in charge, there is no ideal hour to minimize looting.
To place the timing away from the maximum looting hour, gives looter organizers more time to plan. To place timing closer to looting hour maximizes the ability to use the emotion of the moment.
Any of you 100” flat screen TVs out there... be prepared! Don’t let your guard down even for a second.
Thats my Guess.
Give the Media Ferguson to get the sheeple to focus on and distract attention.
Probably on Christmas Eve, just like Obamacare.
The same moment it is announced the house should announce they de-funded any thing connected to it.
...said the Senate leader who hasn't passed a proper budget in years.
The day before Thanksgiving, at 4:30pm Eastern. It would effectively be invisible in the media until Sunday.
Yeh yeh,,it’s going to be timed to come out after Ferguson has been set on fire. Dems are just playing a game here.
That’s exactly when he’ll do this. He has his thugs in place along with the Feds to fuel any demonstrations and confrontations ( may turn out to be another Watts). This will of course take the focus of Grouber and the lying administration off the news and allow the alphabets to talk about the riots rather than some snowfall/
First Reid wanted him to wait.
Now he wants him to act.
What gives?
The polls are moving against them?
The media can’t keep a lid on this?
The growing outrage of Americans might get in his way?
The GOP-e is growing a pair?
Yep, the DOJ will give them a heads up as to when the GJ is finished with their work.
Who cares when Obama breaks the law. He does it so often it’s become rather boring.
Obama,
The poverty rate has skyrocketed since you became president. Why do you want to add to it?
That, the Ferguson grand jury decision, is why I believe he is waiting.
His aim is to create a situation where the population is so outraged that they widely demonstrate their frustrations with his actions. This may, or may not, create enough friction that he declares Martial Law and suspends the Republicans from taking over in Congress.
Will we do what he hopes?
Except the day after Thanksgiving, that would certainly redefine Black Friday.
