Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that the Americas were discovered by Muslims in the 12th century, nearly three centuries before Genoese explorer Christopher Columbus claimed the discovery in the name of Spain.
"Contacts between Latin America and Islam date back to the 12th century. Muslims discovered America in 1178, not Christopher Columbus," the president said in a televised speech during an Istanbul summit of Muslim leaders from Latin America.
"Muslim sailors arrived in America from 1178. Columbus mentioned the existence of a mosque on a hill on the Cuban coast," Erdogan said.
Erdogan said that Ankara was even prepared to build a mosque at the site mentioned by the Genoese explorer.
"I would like to talk about it to my Cuban brothers. A mosque would go perfectly on the hill today," the Turkish leader said.
In an article published in 1996, historian Youssef Mroueh refers to a diary entry from Columbus that mentions a mosque “on top of a beautiful mountain” in Cuba. But the diary entry is widely understood as a metaphoric reference to a protuberance on the summit of a mountain that resembles a mosque's dome or minaret.

The irony is that a Muslim may actually have discovered America... sorta. But that fact undermines the Black Legend of Spain. See, during the time of the Spanish Inquisition, any Muslim was entirely exempt from the Inquisition... as long as he admitted to being a Muslim, as opposed to trying to infiltrate the Catholic Church. And many Muslims had many high positions in society, including judges, doctors... and sea captains. And it just so happened that Christopher Columbus’ navigator, Pedro Alonzo Nuno, may have been Muslim, since he was Morroccan. (However, his name may indicate he had converted from Islam.)

Since when did “modern turkish” become fashionable? Only after their drumming, during the First World War, where they sided with the HUNS. Only AFTER Great Britain seized most of what was the Ottoman Empire, and created such countries, where there were not before, throughout the Middle East and Near Asia.

If true, then why was there no massive reduction in populations much earlier, as happened when Europeans introduced a whole range of communicable diseases upon the natives? Hmm? Those diseases were common to Spaniards, Arabs & Turks.
He won’t be undisputed despot in Turkey for much longer.
