Big telecommunications companies and many Republicans in Congress have criticized President Obama’s proposal for strong rules to prevent the creation of fast and slow lanes on the Internet. They claim this is heavy-handed government regulation. But in fact, it is correcting an old mistake.
Even if broadband is reclassified as a telecommunications service, no one is talking about having federal regulators approve consumer rates or requiring companies to lease their networks to competitors. What Mr. Obama wants is an Internet where service providers handle all content sent and received by consumers equally. His approach takes into account what has happened in the past decade, and it levels the playing field for businesses and protects consumer choice.

They don’t, as far as terrorist conspiracy and digital piracy is concerned. Either they aren’t trying or the digital crime community is more massive than the government can handle.

Why don’t they regulate printing presses since books and CDs and records have been bootlegged for decades?
No one should ever heed Obama’s advice. If it must be done, wait until his term is over. We all know this president will lie, cheat, do whatever it takes to further his agenda.
They need to maintain the image of power and competence. A lot of people are gullible enough to believe exaggeration as well. My own experience though, shows that real power over the internet or even broadcasted information, is actually limited.
FEC is seeking power over the internet too. Not over foreign contributions to campaigns. Nope, political blogs that favor one candidate over another.

Hands off my internet Obamao. The internet pipe shouldn’t be treated like a water pipe where some jackboot can turn my water on and off at will. Nor should it be that the government can tell me what I can and cannot access online and at what speed.
