Da'von Shaw, a Bedford, Ohio high school student, brought apples and craisins to school for a "healthy eating" presentation he was giving to his speech class. He took out a knife to slice an apple, and I'm sure you can all guess what happened next:
“When I took out the knife the teacher then told me that I couldn't use it, so I didn't hesitate I just gave it to her,” said Da'von.
He continued with his other classes, but late in the day was suspended for five days. The suspension letter charged him with having a weapon at school.
His mother Shakila Wilson is angry, saying, “I can take off my belt and use that as a weapon. Pens and pencils can be used as a weapon. You can't take a person with no intentions to harm and put them as a criminal because that's what you normally do.”
She feels the punishment is too much, didn't take the circumstances into account and worries about her son missing classes and assignments.

Idiocy. Hopefully the Republicans will put an end to this nonsense in the public schools.
Black students are truly violent, which isn’t fair,so we have to even it out by trumping things up on white students and pretending they are just as violent as black students.

Practically every kid in my school had a trusty Barlow or Boy Scout Knife. It’s a wonder I lived through it!
The idiocy of the zero tolerance crowd is astounding.
I’ll say it again - you’ll never meet people more bureaucratic, narrow-minded and reactionary than “academics.”
We should not allow morons to educate our children.
She's right. A freshly sharpened [high quality] wooden pencil makes an outstanding and highly lethal weapon.
Zero tolerance is about taking away decision making and eliminating common sense and getting teachers used to deferring to a central authority.

Along with the cake she brought paper plates, plastic forks and a KNIFE to cut the cake.
She was immediately suspended by the principal and missed important class time during the week before her final exams.
Parents complained. No explanation, no common sense just another failure of our public schools.
Maybe he should have uncoiled a couple feet of dental floss or small gauge wire and used that to slice the apple. Obviously those things couldn’t be used as a weapon /s
Every kid I knew in school had a pocket knife. In high school we had shootguns in the trunks of our cars to go straight for a grain field for dove hunting. We even had a school rifle club. And nobody got hurt, nobody pulled weapons on anybody. When are these stupid rules going to stop. Good kids getting caught up in these stupid rules!
