I would like to see ALL of Obamacare repealed. Every last word of it. But I can’t imagine it happening as long as BHO occupies 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
DEFUND IT!!!!!!!
Plain. Simple. Common sense.
But no, McConnell just surrendered in advance, the only weapon Congress had to STOP anything Obama does; the power of the purse.
And, on cue - you guys will tell us that the GOP cannot do anything until they "win" the presidency.
Pathetic and predictable.
The simple answer is NEVER to vote for Dems in the first place IMHO.
Horsepucky. You guys screamed at Conservatives that we have to vote for a Democrat if they have an 'R' after their name, because 'We have to have a seat at the table before we can do anything to stop Obama".
Then the very turtle you guys were shaming Conservatives into voting for - insisting we overlook what he did for Cochran in MS and his vow to 'crush' the Tea Party - SURRENDERS the weapon to stop Obama's agenda, so they can have a seat at the government trough.
Obama is a flaming narcissist. He is also extremely insecure. He hides behind his ego to avoid admitting his insecurity. When he starts getting his vetoes overridden he will start coming unglued. I believe there might actually be a good chance of a "nervous breakdown".
Thus, I believe it is a good strategy to start with small changes that have sufficient support to override any veto. It will only take a couple of them to stop him from using his veto pen. An override will be public proof of his incompetence and his narcissism won't allow that.
What portions of Obamacare are you ok with?
What provisions are not an unconstitutional abridgement of your liberty?
Can you pick and chose which portions of the 2000 page bill were perfectly legitimate and ought to remain in effect?
Agreed... the only way to be sure of deep-sixing Obamacare is to get a conservative in the White House. But in the meantime, that’s no excuse for the “right” side to stop doing what’s right. If we have 10,000 chances to vote to repeal the accursed thing, then let’s vote 10,000 times! What do we have to lose? Obama will try to make political hay of it, either way; SOMEBODY has to have integrity and do the right thing, regardless of political fears (which are illusory, anyway).
Replace McConnell with Cruz.
Replace Boehner with Gowdy.
Fix bayonets. Charge!
I said that too. Suffocate the damned thing.
Please re-read my first post #8.
Defund Obamacare, defund defund defund.
Congress has the power of the purse now.
They should use it! I agree! I’m all for it!
THAT is our REAL power now. The budget and the power to control spending. Yes! Do it! I’m ALL for it!
You can do that if you want.
The only thing we might accomplish is interrupting BHO’s golf game.
Unless BHO arranges for couriers to deliver them to him out on the golf course. He will keep a veto pen and replacement ink cartridges permanently in his golf cart.
Hate to say it folks, but the train has already left the station a long time ago. There are too many people already enrolled in ACA compliant plans, too many people enrolled in exchanges, and too many people adversely affected by changes to their old plans, to simply repeal. The Republicans that ran on repeal in the previous election failed.
We need to move on from the emotional debate of “hell yeah, repeal it all!” and put forth good alternatives to change the law. Keep in mind, if we do away with the individual mandate the insurance carriers can’t survive and we will accellerate the move to single payor (there won’t be any other option but a Governement-run benefits administrator).
If we eliminate the individual mandate, then we need to eliminate carrier mandates (allowing carriers to decline to quote based on risk) or have greater freedom on rate setting. Need to focus on real cost management initiatives, tort limits, interstate competition, the ability to offer low cost, scaled back benefits, etc...
“Thus, I believe it is a good strategy to start with small changes that have sufficient support to override any veto.”
Do you really think there will ever be enough Democrats on board to override an Obama veto?
I don’t.
Very few democrats will ever vote to override an Obama veto.
I assure you it will NEVER happen if Republicans play defense.
“You think losing the entire country in a complex policy-wonk debate about the merits of “the individual mandate” would be more effective than simply “repealing ObamaCare?”
Well it isn’t really complex as long as too much isn’t tossed up at once.
People know that they are now required to buy insurance under penalty of law. This was the provision that was taken to the high court because it was so out there that it would have been an easy win. The provision that people on both sides thought was sure to get taken down. And was until Roberts flipped.
“Not many people are as informed as those on this forum. Nobody I know who has seen these ball-busting monthly premiums and astronomic deductibles has ever said to me, If not for that individual mandate.... No. What I have heard quite often however is, F***ing ObamaCare!”
But then you run into problems. While the (I-M) is almost universally despised (and few Dems would dare defend it), you now have the whole nebulous Obamacare that unfortunately becomes mishmash of stuff almost everyone hates and stuff that the Democrat’s toadies can go and appeal emotionally to the 48% that will then demand that the “evil GOP” not “take away my healthcare” and thus supporting Obama’s vetoes. This route is going to be long, and Democrats would love a long fight that gives them plenty of room to maneuver and stall until the public gets tired and disinterested.
Now Obama is likely going to veto it regardless of how it’s done, so it isnt even a discussion of that. It is more of a plan as to how the veto will be played with the unfortunately significantly large LIVs population.
Either:
A) “Obama saved my healthcare”. (by vetoing a total repeal)
B) “Obama is forcing me to buy health insurance or else I get a visit by the IRS”.
(by vetoing the individual mandate repeal)
Or in a miracle...
C) Obama signs it, and the whole law collapses.
I will let them start on it this way.. it will crumble under its own weight even faster... then full repeal becomes even more attractive.
By the time he gets to his leaders chair, there is going to be hell to pay when reality of mandatory business rates kick in.
So far the numbers of policies actually affected is trivial to that which is going to kick in pretty much now.
McConnell and the GOPe do not want Obamacare repealed. Obamacare would be dead today had McConnell not stabbed Ted Cruz in the back last year.
Shut the government down, and Obama will cave in a week.
“What portions of Obamacare are you ok with?”
I’m not ok with any of it.
But I’m not going to pretend like sending up a full repeal, just to have it vetoed, just to get everyone on record, is much more than a waste of time.
Like who doesn’t know Democrats all supported it and All the GOP didn’t?
If you are going to do it, at least get something out of it other than restating the obvious.
“Can you pick and chose which portions of the 2000 page bill were perfectly legitimate and ought to remain in effect?”
You can pick the one part that everyone hates, and is the funding mechanism that keeps it alive.
Minimum effort. Maximum impact.
Oh, going after just the individual mandate would be complex. You would have weeks upon weeks of media shills, spinners, lobbyists, editorialists, you name it, "analyzing" the proposal, debating what it would mean for this group or for that group -- Will the judiciary get involved? Can the rest of the law survive without the mandate? If so, what parts...?
By the time it's finished, nobody in the country would have a clue.
But "Repeal ObamaCare." Not complex. All or nothing. Simple enough for even some LIVs to understand.
If Obama vetoes it, then he owns it. Any Democrat who doesn’t vote to overturn the veto would own it.
You try to “fix it” and Obama signs off on the “fix”, then YOU own it.
The law in its entirety is unconstitutional. Anyone who took an oath to uphold and defend the constitution has an moral obligation to work to repeal it. Fixing any part of it without first attempting to repeal it does nothing more than legitimize the original legislation.
Do you favor McConnell violating his oath to try to legitimize a wholly unconstitutional robbery of your liberty? Is that the path you really want your representatives to take?
