That "Maher has a few facts on his side.", translation - that he's finally telling the truth, is probably the source of the consternation, and if Maher can "get it" once in Blue Moon, others might too, is the worry.
The liberal students are standing with the Homophobic & Misogynic muslims and against a die-hard liberal stating the truth about said muslims.
There are a number of blue moons in a decade, so I’d reference “once a decade” rather than “in a blue moon”.

Not so strange. Liberal students (with the exception being children of the elite) are basically leftist pawns. They believe what they are told to believe. To make the connection you have made requires critical thinking which is discouraged amongst the leftist faithful.
