Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell plans to counter the influx of Democratic spending aimed at defeating him by writing a big personal check.
The Republican leader is loaning his campaign $1.8 million out of his own bank account, exceeding a $1.5 million investment by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Senate Majority PAC to bolster the prospects of Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes.
A McConnell campaign official told POLITICO Friday that his boss is making the donation because he has long said that the National Republican Senatorial Committee should spend money in other hotly contested races not his own.
Sen. McConnell has maintained a longstanding personal commitment to his members that he wont draw any resources from the team, said John Ashbrook, McConnells spokesman. So hes going to match Obamas money men out of his own pocket.
The move does not suggest that the McConnell campaign is short of money, officials said. In campaign finance reports filed last week, McConnell reported $5.2 million in cash in his account. But the move is also not out of character for the senator, whose minimum net worth was estimated by the Center for Responsive Politics to be $9.2 million in 2012.
In 2008, McConnell secured a $1.8 million loan in the final days of his campaign before his 6-point victory against businessman Bruce Lunsford.
Democrats are more upbeat about their prospects in Kentucky after a Survey USA poll earlier this week showed the GOP leader up just 1 point. As a result of favorable polling, DSCC officials said this week they would spent $650,000 on the air in the final stretch of the campaign, after signaling earlier they would not increase their spending across the airwaves. Similarly, the Senate Majority PAC, a big-spending Democratic super PAC run by top Harry Reid advisers, plans to up its attacks on McConnell on TV to the tune of $850,000, according to media trackers.
The candy Baroness Maria Teresa Thierstein Simões Ferreira is truly a creation of the absurd. A Mozambican born, South African raised former U.N. Interpreter and daughter of a wealthy Expat from Portugal. Somehow met and married into one of the wealthiest industrialist families in the country by marrying a Republican Senator from Pittsburgh. .
She then inherited one of the great American fortunes and then married old horse face. John Heinz must be having whiplash from all the spinning of his corpse.
Given it's all he's ever done, that 1.8 million represents 10 years of gross income. Which is indeed absurd. Unless being in the Senate somehow magically translates into much more than just base salary, through sources which would be considered shady if spoken of openly, like legal insider trading. Then it might make perfect sense. Which it does.
McConnell began interning for Senator John Sherman Cooper (R-Ky.) in 1964, and McConnell's time with Cooper inspired McConnell to run for the Senate himself.[10] Later, McConnell was an assistant to Senator Marlow Cook (R-Ky.) and was a Deputy Assistant Attorney General under President Gerald R. Ford. In 1977, McConnell was elected the Jefferson County Judge/Executive, the former top political office in Jefferson County, Kentucky. He was re-elected in 1981. 1984 won US Senate seat.
So how did McConnell amass such a fortune?
Being a Tea Party person I have mixed emotions about this election.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
Not me. If I lived in KY, I’d vote 3rd Party or write-in someone. I will not vote for anyone who hates Tea Partiers, Conservatives and wants to crush us. I guess I’m vindictive, but anybody who hates me and threatens me and then wants me to vote for them can kiss my butt on both sides.
HE WHO DOES NOT LIKE REVENGE HAS NEVER TASTED IT.
We have to work with what we have.

No we don’t. That’s like saying: “Make a choice: Do you want to be raped by the guy who will just rape you or the guy who will rape you but give you a kiss in the process.
So we should vote for Grimes over McConnell?
Throw away votes on third party candidates?
Stay at home on election day?
what do you suggest in this race?
But, but they promised to do something this time, really! They have changed! Honest! Right...
Over the last couple of months or so I have been in several situations where hatred of McConnell has come up in conversation and the great works of that brain dead idiot Grimes. Out right lies about him cutting social security or this program etc... the usual rotgut the democrats trot out. In the past I would have engaged the person or persons bringing it up but alas I have remained silent this time around.
Mitch made it clear he did not want my help, support or vote being a tea party conservative. I have stood by many times anxiously awaiting a statist liberal Republican to jump up and defend Mitch, but it didn’t happen. Then I figured well at least a so-called conservative apologist would land on the scene to take the battle to the leftist but not a peep. Finally I figured one of his Chamber of Crony Communist would come forth to defend the great turtle man of Kentucky but no. So Mitch was pretty much left to be trashed, but that is the way he wanted it I presume from all of his actions and statements in the last year. He made his bed...
vote for the most conservative candidate that can win......
That would be Mitch
You vote for Grimes and you support the candidate of the United Mine Workers union even though she has committed to killing coal. I traveled in South East Kentucky l;ast week and was flabbergasted to see UMWA for Grimes signs
Those signs you saw were probably from the most hardcore union goons. My guess is that rank and file coal miners will vote overwhelmingly for McConnell, as the Dem Party (not just BHO and Grimes) are suicidal for the coal industry and everyone knows it.
I’m sure you are correct but there lot and lots of the signs mile after mile.
It just didn’t make any sense.
I live in east Tennessee and nearly everyday we get mitch commercials during Rush being broadcast into eastern Kentucky lambasting Grimes as a coal hater.
Were they yard signs in front of homes, or are just plastered all over the place on public utility polls and other public places?
The fact that this is a “race” at all is a clear and concise judgement on the Senate Minority Leader. He should be blowing the loony D away, instead his failure has him in an actual contest.
Dear Kentucky, do you think you would have a race if you had voted for Matt Bevin in the Primary? I’d bet he would have a 20+ point lead right now.
Doesn't say who you should vote for, but the big bucks in the family only came in recently, and weren't from Mitch's activities.
While not endorsing McConnell per se, what interests me is why this is only a news story when a Republican does it.
Thank you for setting the record straight.
It won’t stop the knee jerk McConnell haters from getting in their childish digs.
There is nothing wrong with being wealthy, even if you marry into it.
I hate it when our side makes wealth an issue and use it to attack our own candidates. I thought only the Dems stooped that low. Engaging in the petty politics of class warfare.
The primaries are over now. Time to close ranks just like the Dems.
Just because the candidate you supported in the primary didn’t win, now is not the time to be a sore loser. The stakes are far too high in this election for such childish nonsense.
In polls against Grimes during the primary he polled better than the indispensable man McConnell.
Hell he couldn’t be any worse than McConnnel the turd that won’t flush.
Pick any one from your list above. Look, man; McConnell is going to win. But, I’d feel a lot better about myself being able to say that I did not help him do so.
So how did McConnell amass such a fortune?

He got a part-time Job at Wal-Mart. Seriously, Washington insiders get a helluva lot of perks that we don’t know about. They make big bucks but have few expenses that are not paid for by “others” and have “buddies in the know” who tell them where and how to invest their money PLUS they get huge bucks for speeches, etc..... IT’S A FREAKIN’ RACKET!
Bevin wasn’t prepared to answer questions about why his signature was on TARP documents. His campaign team allowed him to attend what was known to be a pro-cockfighting rally, and when it was explicitly identified as such he stayed instead of leaving. There were some other amateurish flubs as well.
Iirc people said that after beating Lugar in the primary, Mourdock would sweep to victory too. What’s Mourdock doing these days again?
Bevins may have been better on the issues, but he was a horrible candidate. Which matters too. Had he won the nomination the KY Democrat political machine would have beaten Bevins like a redheaded step-child. And for a fraction of the cost that they’re incurring to take on McConnell.
Well, lets see..... they were the small plastic screen printed signs with the wires that stick in the ground. they were on the right off way. I think they were commonly between the two up rights of road signs. There were a lot of them though, more than just at the road signs
We drove up US23 across south west Virginia up to pikeville to see the fall color
