MOSCOW, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Russia has begun a large-scale militarization of the Arctic Ocean region, with a military command structure planned by 2017.
It comes after recent discoveries of oil and natural gas reserves under the ocean floor, and the possibility a potential Northern Sea Route -- an alternative to the Suez Canal -- could soon be established as global climate change causes melting of Arctic ice.

Russia already held that territory, as far as I know, and reactivating old bases is not shocking.
I’m not worried about oil - we have enough here for the next few centuries ... as the price is now ($80+) - it will not be economical for Russia to capture that oil. Their whole economy is predicated on oil above $100 bl.
Do you want to attack them? Start a real nuclear war? What is your solution? Sanctions?
The best solution is just to keep the price of oil below or near $80 - I heard one analyst say it will fall to $40 before rebounding. Those bases will close and be abandoned again, and the whole of the Russian economy and military expansion/upgrading will crash back to 1985 levels or below. That being the case, Putin will fall as well.
All the rest will once again pull back from Russia when it collapses as they did last time. This is Russia’s last pseudo-Communist hurrah.
And if it doesn't? Then what?
Do you want to attack them? Start a real nuclear war? What is your solution? Sanctions?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I did not mention attacking anyone.
Canada needs to establish its own series of military bases in its arctic. Ti do that it will need money ot now spends on social programs, notably Canada’s annual federal budget spends over 50% on universal health care.So where will the money come from? Cuts? Or will BIG OIL trade some of its profit for purchase of federal exploration leases , with the money going to establish thiose NOrthern Bases?
Its a REAL problem for Canada which has not been discussed in public, and it needs discussion, right in Parliament.Which is why several of us are whooping up the issue right here.
We know it doesn’t. A little cold weather has never stopped Russian expansionism.
Yes if Pootie Poot is hedging his bet on Global Warming then he I’d either got some magic climate altering technology or he is dumber than a box of lox
Bad news for Alaska, Russia wants it back. Putin is saying that Russia only leased Alaska and the lease is up.He is claiming the USA stole it.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Pooty will use every bit of propaganda he can to get the Russian people behind him. Right now he is the people’s darling.
Entourage in your own oil companies to go in and start pumping now - use money to build/modernize the existing military; send some to establish bases near the new oil facilities.
BIG OIL - oh my word, how awful - in all caps no less! By all means use very small oil and tax payer money to subsidize the whole enterprise.
Ice Station Zebra... for real...
Agreed...I guess elections do have consequences as Obama stated....dire consequences for the free world...a lesson to be learned here....I wonder if it has and will be seen in a few weeks....???
Canada Ping!
And what are we doing to counter this. Nothing it appears.
Oil under the ice.
But, neither Bush nor Obama was able to get the Senate to ratify UNCLOS, so the US has no input thru UNCLOS.
So, Bush and Obama say the ridge is in international waters and the overlapping claims made Canada, Denmark, and Russia are false claims, but we have no way to argue that because we haven't ratified the treaty.
Rather than think that Russia will militarily assert their claim over the ridge, you should also consider that Canada, Denmark, and Russia could negotiate a settlement on how they would split up the ridge among themselves, and get UNCLOS approval of the deal.
Faced with those prospects, Bush sought to negotiate the Arctic within the Arctic Council and Obama has continued with that.
Similarly, Bush sought to negotiate the Antarctic within the OAS and the South China Sea within ASEAN, and Obama has continued along those lines.
The best solution would be to ratify UNCLOS.
That is the very first thing I thought of, as well!
Remember Clinton’s hag SOS said the US shouldn’t be the only superpower. She got her wish. Now it looks like Russia will be.
Russian paratroopers coming through the fog...
Great movie... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Du7ls7v2uYQ
Here’s a short clip.
The young Marine, near the end, locked, loaded, and sighted in on the communist Russian commander... “Either way... you know I’ll pull this trigger... and hold it.”
That’s American... loved it.
How do you give away something that was never yours in the first place.
Yep it seems some on FR are fine with Russian imperialism though
