MOSCOW, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Russia has begun a large-scale militarization of the Arctic Ocean region, with a military command structure planned by 2017.
It comes after recent discoveries of oil and natural gas reserves under the ocean floor, and the possibility a potential Northern Sea Route -- an alternative to the Suez Canal -- could soon be established as global climate change causes melting of Arctic ice.

And our Glorious Leader will do nothing about it.
After all we don’t deserve to be a super power.
We need to learn to lead from behind.
We should let despots lead for awhile.

I hope Canada, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden are up for stopping the Russians, because the US will not.
Well, at least it isn’t “evil” American “imperialism”! #ILOATHELEFTISTS
Pooty is on the roll. Harper has his work cut out for himself..he has a national anual budget which spends over 50% on national health care , with very little dedicated to the Canadian military. There are less than 100,000 soldiers in the Canadian full time military with less than 20 thousand dedicated to direct combat.
In short, something has gotta give in order to establish fully manned military bases with air defence capability in the Canadian Arctic. The USA will be little or no help to Canada for 20 years because of the traitorous Obama presidency.
So what gives Prime Minister Harper? Can you send the NDP Socialist utopian fascist freaks and Liberal Party Trudeau sucking A$$haoles packing in order to cancel social programs to get the Canadian military ramped up?
America’s military led them to an arms race and global hostilities. < /Libsplanation >
NATO???? Wake up!
Let's bring in Algore as a consultant to the Russians so he can advise them in just what century this is likely to occur. Meanwhile, I'd advise the Russians not to scrap their icebreaker fleet just yet.
As an aside, I seem to remember that the Arctic has been militarized since at least the 1950s. The Arctic has always been the route of long range bombers, and the site of early warning radars, as well as the ground that would be overflown by missiles should any be launched.
Thank you for the graphics. The West is really in bad shape.A lot of social programs in Canada will have to end and money put into the military. The same with the socialist nations of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark...their socialist honeymoon lick up has to now end so they can buy guns, butter and beans.
Or we will soon be reading nothing but Pravda and
moving in with those “gorgeous” Russian internet brides.
“militarization” in this case means the establishment of artic bases with long range air defence capability ( cold weather fighter jets and bombers). Russia has claimed parts of Canada, and will now secure them. Canada can do nothing........yet, except surrender or die in two languages.
I’m afraid NATO is at a golf tournament.
...so this is an article about how the Russians are going to take advantage of global warming and we, The West, should be feeling bad for allowing this because of global warming...I thought it was Global Pause...more like Global BS!
from this guys reporting ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTiL1q9YbrVam5nP2xzFTWQ )
this is no global warming and the ice sheets are actually growing...it’s getting colder at the moment and will do so for the coming decade...something the Global Warming idiots failed to place in their calculations...
Another post quite a while back mentioned that the bases in question were from the cold war era, abandoned, and are now being reopened. I don’t see this as anything startling.

Agreed. But the Russians will still establish bases in the Arctic and take sovereign land from Norway, Canada, and Sweden, which is the main point.
A little true cold will not stop the Russians.
Your defense numbers may be correct but I assure you real Americans still have weapons to defend our homeland and homes from invaders. Let me ask you, even after you run out of ammo wouldn’t you still attack ISIS with a butter knife if that’s all you had? I will never surrender, nor willingly dig my own grave or willing allow you to behead me. sorry but that’s just me.

Try to take this context: Russia is an expansionist power which has annexed the Crimea and parts of the Ukraine, moving toward Latvia and Estonia.NATO has done nothing.
What makes you conclude that there is no real danger in terms of the annexation of sovereign territories of Canada, Sweden and Norway, where there is NO permanant military defence presence as there was in the Crimea and Ukraine now annexed?
There are vast oil reserves at play for the keeping.
Still, if they want to get a force ready to handle the post global warming world, what better way is there for a nation more bankrupt than ours to spend money?
Agreed. In the best of all worlds, Canada would be drilling and pumping Artic oil with a string of 12 combat ready airforce bases across the Canadian Arctic to secure them..
It should be simple Canadian public policy at this point, since the Russians anounced their policy.
But the money is lacking. Can Harper go to BIG OIL and get them to fund the necessary military expansion? They Canadian Oil barons have mede billions in windfall profits in Canada for the last 20 years. Is it time that Big Oil Canada puts our pot before its kettle, or what?
Bad news for Alaska, Russia wants it back. Putin is saying that Russia only leased Alaska and the lease is up.He is claiming the USA stole it.
