City Threatens to Arrest Ministers Who Refuse to Perform Same-Sex Weddings (Idaho)
Fox News ^ | Oct. 20, 2014 | Todd Starnes

Two Christian ministers who own an Idaho wedding chapel were told they had to either perform same-sex weddings or face jail time and up to $1,000 in daily fines, according to a lawsuit filed Friday in federal court.

Alliance Defending Freedom is representing Donald and Evelyn Knapp, two ordained ministers who own the Hitching Post Wedding Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

“Right now they are at risk of being prosecuted,” attorney Jeremy Tedesco told me. “The threat of enforcement is more than just credible.”

The wedding chapel is registered as a “religious corporation” limited to performing “one-man-one-woman marriages as defined by the Holy Bible.”

However, the chapel is also a for-profit business and city officials said that means the owners must comply with the local nondiscrimination ordinance.

That ordinance, passed in 2013, prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and it applies to housing, employment and public accommodation.

City Attorney Warren Wilson told The Spokesman-Review in May that the Hitching Post Wedding Chapel likely would be required to follow the ordinance.

“I would think that the Hitching Post would probably be considered a place of public accommodation that would be subject to the ordinance,” he said.

He also told television station KXLY that any wedding chapel that turns away a gay couple would in theory be a violation of the law “and you’re looking at a potential misdemeanor citation.”

Wilson confirmed to Knapp in a telephone conversation that even ordained ministers would be required to perform same-sex weddings, the lawsuit alleges.

Yep. Made possible by those who think we’re supposed to live in a judicial oligarchy, rather than in a constitutional free republic.

Religious liberty and our very form of government are under vicious attack.

You mean Tyranny?* Oh that it were under attack!

* The Government has been itching to free itself from the bonds of the Constitution for as long as it existed; even in the good old days the government was more than ready to ignore the Constitution to suit its own ends.

Homosexuals are looking for people to force to comply. It will eventually be churches.

The destruction of the Church and the Christian Faith has ALWAYS BEEN THE GOAL of the radical leftist homosexual agenda.

Notice btw, they don't try forcing themselves upon Islam?

I’ve been waiting for the tax exempt status of church’s to be removed when they refuse to perform gay weddings. This is just a step in that direction.

> Were in the Constitution does it say that you have to be non-profit to exercise a right?

That's exactly the point I was making.

Muslims can hang homosexuals and not a peep from the liberals. You are right - it is about destroying Christianity.

Meanwhile, the gutless Kootenai County Clerk Jim Brannon, who swore to Christians that he would never issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, promptly reversed course and sent out a notice that he WOULD issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. I personally heard him swear that he would quit the job before doing so.

If folks won’t fight in North Idaho, they probably won’t fight anywhere, I’m afraid.

When same-sex “marraige” was being discussed here a few years back there were clueless people who would call up talk radio and say that they didn’t see how same sex marraige would effect their marriages or anything else. The majority is so eager to give up its rights because of their worship of “tolerance”.

Have no doubt about it, this is a religious war that is going on. The liberal/progressives have their own kind of jihad going on. They may not chop off heads but they are determined and fanatical in their own way. I think they tolerate Muslims because Muslims have been traditional enemies of Christians...”The enemy of my enemy is my friend”.

A decade ago the homonazis weren’t suing Christian business owners now they are which implodes the arguement that gay marriage won’t impact heterosexual marriage.
Ofcourse that arguement implodes when heterosexual children are indoctrinated in schools which promote gay sexuality as being normal and its ok to explore it.

Muslims stone, behead, hang, kill homosexuals...

When we got married in 1973 at my parents’ church in Sapulpa Oklahoma, we ASKED our pastor from our college town (Stillwater Oklahoma) to come and perform our wedding. He accepted the offer, and it meant a one hour drive each way. But NO WAY did I ever expect or demand or assume that Rev Ulrich would accept our offer. I was a request that he come and perform the wedding. And our wedding at my folks’ church, that was a request, not a demand.

That is the way the world worked in 1973.

But look at how they make fun of Christians like Tim Tebow now, and they worship and idolize the raunchy celebrities who sleep around and use drugs and get arrested all the time. Satan is alive and well in USA.

My son is a dedicated church volunteer. He said a lot of people who thought they were gay, are not. He said, for example, girls take drugs like ecstasy. They sodomize each other and think this was so pleasurable that they are gay. Then later, without the mind altering, mood altering drugs, they can be convinced to stop the sodomy with each other. He has talked to some who used drugs and thought they were gay. Then they got off all illegal drugs and figured out that they are straight. He said it happens all the time, in California where he lives. He said ecstasy increases the feeling of pleasure and utopia that it convinces these girls that they are so turned on by each other. Get them off the drugs and they discover it was all just the drugs talking. I heard at our church that drugs are one way satan enters your body mind and soul

I'd say Hobby Lobby makes it pretty clear that's not the case. Closely-held companies retain their rights. The city will lose this.

The “right of association” and private property rights were demolished with the smoking bans. Those that thought it was about “smoke free air” are now getting to see the fruits of the destruction of those rights. Now that it is well established that the local government CAN demand business to cater to a set of customers, they should not be shocked that the local governments ARE demanding that these businesses cater to a favored class of customer.

Many a FReeper celebrated the smoking bans, now they get to enjoy the fruits of their empowering the government to do such things.

“Do constitutional rights end when one creates a business?”

As a matter of fact, YES they do. Many a FReeper helped to push such an agenda to eliminate private property rights for business owners. Search any smoking ban thread and you will see the convenient conservatives screaming for an elimination of private property rights for business owners.

They got it, now they can choke on it.
