City of Houston demands pastors turn over sermons [Dealing With Homosexuality]

The city of Houston has issued subpoenas demanding a group of pastors turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality, gender identity or Annise Parker, the city’s first openly lesbian mayor. And those ministers who fail to comply could be held in contempt of court.

“The city’s subpoena of sermons and other pastoral communications is both needless and unprecedented,” Alliance Defending Freedom attorney Christina Holcomb said in a statement. “The city council and its attorneys are engaging in an inquisition designed to stifle any critique of its actions.”

ADF, a nationally-known law firm specializing in religious liberty cases, is representing five Houston pastors. They filed a motion in Harris County court to stop the subpoenas arguing they are “overbroad, unduly burdensome, harassing, and vexatious.”

So not one single Houston bureaucrat attends church?

Will Sheila Jackson Lee’s beloved black liberation church be served as well?

No way will this survive in the Federal courts.

I remember hearing someone say in the last month or two, Jay Sekulow I think, to bring it on.

GOOD point because there were a lot of black churches that stood up to Anise Porker on this ordinance.

~~~It’s a huge bluff with nothing of legal substance whatsoever behind it.~~~
I agree
Sure, it wont pass muster in court.
But just amazing that she thinks she can do this!! She will try it and she will make the courts say no. Hey if the courts don’t say no, then she wins.
Just like forcing homosexual marriages into the system. If the courts don’t say no - then we have homosexual marriages.
i think the real issue here is tax-exempt status for “churches”
if churches want to start directly commenting & getting involved in POLITICS then fine, that does not bother me
but then they should also start paying TAXES
it would be nice if the Houston Texans and the Rangers and others would hold public displays of support for the churches...
it would be nice if people stood up to this arse....
I though Houston was red country with all the Nasa people there...
WTF is going on? This CAN’T be Constitutional! How can it be happening? I’m very live-and-let-live in my views, but I also apply it to Christian pastors and their congregations.
I have a separate question on this. Did the City Council also issue the same subpoena for the local mosques?
The people in Texas that I would hope would not tolerate this type of crap, because sitting around praying for Jesus to fix this isnt going to do anything.
"No way will this survive in the Federal courts."
There is no way "SHE" should survive thru the end of the week... MHO.
Well...maybe that's a little harsh....just break her Knee caps and throw her in the alley...
Opposition to this obnoxious order needs to keep it in the state of Texas which almost certainly has freedom of religious exercise in the Texas Constitution. If so, then it is an illegal act and these are illegal subpoenas and they should get initially at least a restraining order against the subpoenas.
DON’T go to the feds who are barred from prohibiting free exercise of religion and are NOT authorized to enforce it. (Giving the feds unconstitutional power to enforce free exercise opens the door for feds to meddle with the whole free exercise issue.)
Just like forcing homosexual marriages into the system. If the courts don’t say no - then we have homosexual marriages.
In this case, she may be pressing the issue that the churches have signed up with the government with their 501c3. And therefore these churches are not allowed by government to make political statements. She is pushing it, if she wins she wins; if she loses she doesnt care, no loss to her, she will just try it again in another way at another time, and again, and again, and again....
Well sir, I am in Alaska for 1. Now, our nations leaders used to open meetings in a long fervent prayer. The leaders of this nation from the beginning prayed before any action. Then, they went and did it! Yes, prayer fixes things. Faith also requires action.
We are too soft in our living to rise up any longer, and for that I am sad.
I am guessing and could be wrong on this, but mosques probably haven’t signed up for a 501c3, and therefore would be exempt.
