If Mr. Astorino is to realize his long-shot quest to defeat Mr. Cuomo, he must win over thousands more people like Mr. Stalaj: Democrats and unaffiliated voters willing to look past party label and social issues like gun control and abortion rights, over which Mr. Cuomo has been relentlessly hammering Mr. Astorino as an ultraconservative.

Cuomo should be very worried that the NYT printed this.
Cuomo has nothing to worry about. Astorino is simply not a good fit for NY state. He is socially conservative in a state where 3/4 of the voters are socially liberal.
The NYTimes doesn’t like Cuomo. Not that they like Astorino - but they ‘ll be throwing some jabs at Cuomo to indicate their displeasure. They wouldn’t endorse Cuomo in the primary. I wouldn’t be surprised if they abstained from endorsing anyone in the Governor’s race, in the election.
Ping
Cuomo sucks. The state above the Tappan Zee and below JFK is conservative. It’s NYC that sucks all the life out of NY.
New York elected a GOPer (Pataki) over Mario Cuomo when Pataki ran as a pro death sentence conservative.
Something about the Cuomo’s is that become really annoying to just about everyone after a few years.
Unfortunately, the GOP party system was killed under state chairman Ed Cox and NY may never elect a Republican statewide again.
Seriously?
Astorino has done pretty well in Westchester County where the demographics are probably more heavily weighted in the Democrats favor.
3/4 of the voters are being hammered by the highest taxes in the nation and have nothing to show for it. That's why anyone that can is voting with their feet and abandoning NY. Social issues are not relevant when you can't afford your mortgage.
The Northeast (and I live in CT) has to crash and burn before the LOINFO voters ever get it. The average voter here has no idea how screwed he is.
The TV and radio ads against Astorino dwell on his opposition to a woman’s right to “choose” and spending bills he’s voted against, describing that as harming women, the elderly and minorities. They don’t mention the parts of the bills that poisoned them, of course.
He should do “here’s why” ads in response. I haven’t seen any for him.
Thanks for the ping.
I heard Rob Astorino interviewed by Betsy McCaughey Tuesday (Betsy filled in for Laura Ingraham for much of the show.) Astorino mentioned how pro-”choice” women are leaving NY State because they, or their husband, don’t have a good job, high taxes, etc..
It’s a good point. NY has the highest abortion rate in the country, but yet these pro-”choice” women leave the state for jobs, and/or lower taxes. These women better wake up and realize who their real friends are, and not be tricked by a so-called “War on Women.” They are being used and manipulated and don’t even realize it.
“..I havent seen any for him.”
Astorino doesn’t have a lot of money, so is probably saving his ads for the end when it counts most.
btw, conservative NY State Senator Kathy Marchione was outspent 10 - 1, and saved her ads for the very end, and WON! That’s part of the reason why she’s now SENATOR Marchione. She used her small amount of money wisely.
“Astorino has done pretty well in Westchester County ..”
Yes, and it was 2 - 1 Dem, and he won by 13%! He was called a long shot then, and behind in the polls.
I hear he was re-elected by a landslide, too.
Also, here’s an excerpt from the Wall Street Journal which should help Rob Astorino quite a bit:
“....So three cheers for GOP candidate for Governor Rob Astorino, who is promoting a tax reform to lift New York from the doldrums.
The executive for Westchester County, north of New York City, is calling for a simpler system that cuts..”
