Memo to future jurors: This may be the most disastrous way to get out of jury duty.
A Douglas County juror grew increasingly panicked this week as the brief trial of a sex offender, accused of failing to register, spilled into a second day.
The trial began Wednesday with the juror mentioning how he didnt want to miss work because of all the bills he had to pay.
It ended Thursday with the juror in a jail cell, a judge fuming, veteran court officials shaking their heads and the sex offender acquitted.
Ive never seen anything like it, said prosecutor Tom McKenney, who has been practicing for 36 years.

Every Friday, I went to the court house, heard a bunch of cases, decided to indict or not indict, usually done by 1:30 and had the rest of the afternoon off.
The most difficult part was dealing with some real meatheaded co-jurors. There are some seriously stupid people out there, posing as normal members of society.
Exactly. They pull you out in the voir dire immediately. You are correct.
Paying Taxes is Patriotic... they just want to make sure that you are a patriotic as possible.
I’ve been called eight times here in CT and served twice. Only if the trial lasts more than five days do jurors get paid and they have to apply for reimbursement.
Yes, yes. America sucks. It's evil. It is all one big conspiracy to keep the little guy down...
Yawn
Is this FreeRepublic or MSNBC? Get a real job, hippie.
That’s pretty weird.
Compared to the rest of the state’s rules, laws and practices, that’s not even odd.
“I personally dont think anyone under the age of thirty ought to be called to be on a jury....because of their limited life experience.”
I would make high school seniors jurors for their last summer before college. Let them see for themselves why their pinko teachers were FOS. I would also fire every polling official and have high school seniors, selected at random work the polling stations. They can get extra credit for it.
I was in a court room waiting to be asked to be on a jury. The case was about a fight between 2 guys with the accused saying he was guilty. Wasted 2 days for 150 people brought in. The 2nd day the guy who pleaded guilty did not even come in!
I have served on seven or eight juries over a nine year span. One was for murder, several civil cases, drug cases, and assault cases. Elected foreman for most of these trials.
I am actually kind of shocked that I got on this many, my brother in law is a police officer and my uncle is a retired police officer.
The murder case was one I thought I would be kicked from for sure, but amazingly wasn’t. Tons of circumstantial evidence, an eye witness, and then the idiot defense lawyer put the defendant on the stand and he hung himself, the prosecutor shredded him. Death penalty was off the table so he ended up with 25 yrs. before eligible for parole.
By far the worse cases were the civil trials, lots of video taped medical testimony, bored to tears, I even caught the judge dozing off once and the clerk gently tapped the wall next to him to wake him.
200 years of use with no objection from the courts says the gov’t can do it.
Don’t like it, sue the US and see how that goes. As long as you are a man, you have standing.
Let us know how it turns out.
There have, in fact, been numerous court challenges to the draft. In every case, the courts have ruled that it is permissible. But there is no way they can rule that way and remain logically consistent, any more than they can rule that a tax is not a tax or that a woman has a right to murder her child or that forcing citizens to pay tax on their incomes isn’t slavery.
The point is that courts that are supposed to rule based on reason and legal principle do not. They are subject to the same political expediencies everyone else is.
And how is a draft not involuntary servitude?

Like an income tax.....
Exactly. Only by torturing the logic can the courts arrive at these transparently contradictory conclusions. “Separate is inherently unequal.” “The right to keep and bear arms does not include assault weapons.” “The ‘penumbra’ of the right to privacy makes it legal for a woman to murder an unborn child.” Slavery is slavery. Unless it isn’t.
You mention compulsory military service isn’t mentioned in the Constitution.
Wrong.
Unless specifically exempted, ALL able bodied men were in the militia. The draft just naturally grew out of that.
Sounds like you may have forgotten to register and required, and now find out you screwed yourself over.
I just don’t understand how anyone can refuse to do their civic duty when called upon.
“Indentured servitude” sounds like slavery and the gimedats wanting restitution.
The lawyers should contribute a portion of their earnings from the trial to the Jury Pool.
The only people serving on juries are those who are too stupid to figure out how to get out of doing jury duty.
I’m scheduled to appear this coming Tuesday for a Grand Jury ‘audition’. Tried to get out of it but really had no valid/concrete excuse.
I hope you don't mean that some will get $8 an hour and some get $25 an hour. There should be a set payment that everyone gets. Also, people should be able to volunteer for jury duty and be part of the pool
slavery still exists
