In the small, suburban city of Woburn, Mass., some 25 minutes north of Boston, local history will be made. On Thursday, Oct. 9, the Bostonian Society will finally crack open the 113-year old time capsule lodged in the head of the lion statue that typically sits perched atop the Old State House in downtown Boston.
The statue, paired with its unicorn counterpart, was hoisted from the city's oldest, continuously used public building as part of a renovation project. It was subsequently decided that whatever goodies are still being kept from the public ought to finally see daylight.
Heather Leet, director for development with the Bostonian Society, told BostInno in an email that the time capsule wasn't confirmed to exist until late in September when it was brought to Skylight Studios in Woburn.

They’ll find nothing but frog bones and a tiny top hat in the time capsule.
Was the idea in 1901 to have this opened after a number of years, rounded to the nearest 113?
Well, I guess they could have chosen 226 or 339... so we are lucky to be here in 2014, after a mere 113 years to see what's inside.
After examination the capsule should be sealed up air and weather tight and put back in the statue for future a generation.

It sounds like they were probably supposed to open it after 100 years, but it ended up being ‘forgotten’. Seems the statue was removed and in storage somewhere for a while before the capsule was tracked down.
No, tickets to the next Cubs / Red Sox World Series.
13 years late on the original plan? A century seems such a small blip in time. I hope they put it back.
Will Geraldo be doing the honors?
Oh, wait, this is one of those capsules that goes forward in time, not backward. Never mind.
Don’t forget the little cane, too.
