Editor Lifson and I went back and forth on whether we should post on the startling news. In the end. we couldn't find another reliable source so we decided to hold off.
And the Iraqi army appears to be wavering.
To highlight the serious nature of the threat to Iraq's capital, British and American planes have pounded ISIS positions in the last 24 hours, apparently trying to keep them at bay.
"The Islamic State are now less than 2km (1.2 miles) away from entering Baghdad. They said it could never happen and now it almost has,” Canon Andrew White of the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East, a British-based charity that supports Iraq’s only Anglican church in Baghdad, said on his Facebook page early Monday morning. “Obama says he overestimated what the Iraqi Army could do. Well, you only need to be here a very short while to know they can do very, very little.”
The Christian aid group was referring to the U.S. president’s interview Sunday night on “60 Minutes,” the CBS news magazine show, where Obama conceded that his administration underestimated the ascendancy of ISIS. More than 1,000 Iraqi troops were reportedly killed Sunday in clashes with ISIS about 10 miles outside of Baghdad.

Gee, then they own our multi-billion dollar embassy that we abandoned.
It still amazes me how a force of an estimated 30,000, spread across a wide swath of Iraq and Syria, can blow through the Iraqi army like a hot knife through warm batter, while decimating the Syrians at the same time. Are they THAT much better as fighters?
WTF is going on out there?
Don’t worry-— General Obammy has the JV team under control. These bearded ragtags can be exterminated with real men leading the charge.
It’s almost as if obama wants them to succeed...
You can be well funded, you can be well armed, but unless you are well disciplined, you are not an effective fighting force.
These guys run like rabbits.
Not to worry...
Zero has sent a guy with a can of red paint to the area to draw another line....
I think their brutality precedes them. When you know you will be executed if captured it probably gives you pause. It is a very effective way to wage war. The Romans did the same thing.
Who cares? I hope it does fall to them. All it will do is embolden Israel to act against them sooner. They will deal with them & finish the job—guaranteed.
There is more than 30,000 of them. And more than half of the Iraqi army are ISIS sympathizers who either lay down their guns and walk away, or join up with ISIS.
Did you watch Megyn Kelly’s show last night? She interviewed a guy, I think it was the Vicar of Baghdad. The guy has MS. Anyway, the Christians and the people there are terrified.
She will talk to him again this evening.
About right. It was over two years after the last US combat troops left South Vietnam when our Embassy was overrun.
The Iraqi army are not fighters. There is no loyalty to the artifical boundries that is the state of Iraq. Hell, most of them are probably up with the ISIS cause so they are definitely not going to risk their neck fighting for something they don’t care about.
Exactly. When you look at it from that perspective their advance makes more sense. Same thing holds true for almost any other of the myriad problems we are facing as a nation. But our rapidly expanding list of national crises is easy to comprehend if one accepts your premise. Just saying.
So why weren’t they bombed as they were approaching Baghdad?
