CDC Headed to Dallas in Advance of Ebola Results

The potential Ebola patient's test results are not in yet, but are expected later Tuesday afternoon or Tuesday evening. CDC personnel are on their way to Dallas in case either of the two samples from the patient being screened are positive for Ebola. If the test was to come back positive, the CDC would lead any actions necessary, with the county providing support, Thompson said.

I guess, if you are not actually a scientist, it does not strike you just how sensationalist and ridiculous books like The Hot Zone are. I have skimmed over a little of it, just enough to see that the descriptions were over-the-top. The people described are caricatures, not real scientists. Ditto for any events described in the book. I prefer to watch documentaries that portray the real people speaking for themselves, than some writer's overactive imagination of how the real people might have acted.

That's fine. You're missing a lot of good information in there that helps to put things in perspective. If nothing else it's a fascinating history of Ebola and Marburg and the attempts to track it's origins.

I recall that twenty to thirty years ago everyone was chattering about how AIDS was going to kill us all. Now there seems to be very little concern about Ebola, people keep parroting the official line, “Nothing to worry about.”

I never for one minute thought that AIDS was going to kill everyone.

Is it my imagination or is it becoming quite common for people to babble like idiots without realizing they sound like idiots and quite often no one ever seems to notice. Surely it’s just my overactive imagination...isn’t it?

The book OUTBREAK explains it pretty well. In order for a disease to spread, it has to be less efficient at killing off people. Ebola taking up to 21 days for symptoms to show does make its spreading more problematic. But if it spreads in the US, I'd think it will be a less deadly disease, and mostly avoidable by not getting in harms way any more than necessary.

What I worry about is if the gov gets more concerned about reassuring the public and because of that taking risks. I'd also be concerned about Halloween this year....kids (young and old) sharing stuff and being in close contact party mode.

Please read those two sentences and explain why you made it appear that I wrote something very, very different from what I actually wrote. It is hard to take you seriously about anything you say after that.

Um, it’s inherently ignorant to say on the one hand that there is nothing to worry about and then in the same breath state that they are actively investigating who he may have had contact with as his symptoms increased. Um, if you think this is going to be the only case due to this patient, um... you’re delusional.
