Back in the 80’s I knew a guy who worked for Cmpbell’s soup that said the workers would flick thir cigarette ashes into the soup vats. I didn’t eat Campbell’s soup for many years because of that. I heard they cleaned up their act and don’t let employees smoke cigarettes onsite anymore. I’m guessing they spit in them now....

Ha! When I first got married (77) I met a girl from Georgia whose dad had a farm with hens.
She told us that Campbells would come thru and give them a “nickel for each dead guinea, and it didn’t matter what them guineas was dead from”
Did not eat canned soup for a long time after that.

There was a campbell’s tomato soup place on Franklin Blvd in south Sacramento. I used to get mexican food at this place across the street. The campbell’s employees would come in for lunch stoned and hopped up on whatever else they had. They should sit there for an hour and nod off or worse, be hyper the entire time.

When the stampede of jobs to Mexico began, the Wall Street Journal had a couple of investigative reporters do an article on the subject.

One part stuck in my mind - Back around the mid-70s, Green Giant moved a California plant down to Mexico and hired a bunch of locals. After a year, the locals were raising Hell because GG laid them off over the Christmas holidays. When they were rehired, GG claimed that since the people didn't work a full year, they were "seasonal workers" and could be paid less than Mexico's minimum wage.

I wrote GG that since I could just imagine what those unhappy people were adding to the product, I wouldn't be buying any more GG products. Never heard a word back. (A denial would have been nice.) Have never bought any of their goods again, not so much for the "yuk" factor, but over how badly they screwed those people.

[Sidebar] Upton Sinclair wrote a hair-raising expose of Chicago's meatpacking industry back in the early 1900s. One event he wrote about was when some guy either fell into a grinder or a lard rendering vat and the production just kept going. He hoped to shock the people over the callousness of the industry. Instead, they raised hell about what went into their food.
