A new Gallup poll out this morning, September 24, 2014, found that 58% of Americans strongly want a third political party choice in the candidates because the two older parties "do such a poor job" representing the people. This number is little changed from a Gallup poll asking the same question in 2007. The third largest political party is the Libertarian Party, yet its candidates face unfair hurdles of ballot access and media exclusion. Many states in the nation purposely raise the bar for Libertarian Party candidates to have their name printed on the ballot alongside the Republican and Democratic candidates.

The only — and I mean only — reason I ever hesitate about a third party is because it likely means several decades of complete Democrat dominance of the country’s politics before the Republicans finally die and a real conservative party is viable.
I just want to vote for someone like me before I pass to my just rewards.
Dick Cheney, do you hear me?
If we had a true Moderate Party (however you define that) in this country, I suspect it would win lots of elections....
UNTIL...
The Right and the Left are forced to move to the center to compete and then you’ll have one big mass. The fact is, there’s no money behind a third party. And I’m not talking Green, Libertarian or some such other nonsense. I’m talking about a viable third party. Never gonna happen.
Yeah. The GOP needs a top to bottom takeover/makeover.
You’re absolutely right....and as you imply, there is no guarantee that any sort of conservative anything would emerge after the dark era such Dem dominance would produce.
I don’t know ... is this more election tie MSM disinformation or are they REALLY ‘reporting’ here?
Before anyone talks about any third party, we have to change election laws to allow for run-offs if no candidate gets a majority. Without run-offs, third parties are just spoilers.
The way the electoral college works, there is a strong built in bias to have only 2 major political parties. At least in presidential politics.
3rd party now?? LOL, easy win for Hillary, she can sleep and not even bother to campaign. I’d go 3rd party too, BUT only if there is a run off election with the two highest percentage winners. 1992 should have been that kind of an election, and the Clintons today would probably still be living in Arkansas. So now we are thinking of pulling off the same kind of an election with another 3 way?
It would be nice to have a party which actually represents, you know, Americans. Instead of illegal aliens, Muslims, blacks, the Free Sh*t Army, etc.
It can’t work without a change in the electoral college requiring a majority. Right now all it takes is 34%.
We need a second party, first.
If a third party could simply grow large enough that neither could gain a majority without appealing to them, that is a huge win. Republicans have spent the last 20 years laughing at me and giving me the finger.
Maybe if the Dems knew they had to seriously address the concerns of the 3rd party to win an election, it would moderate their runaway crazy mentality that they have now.
Reigning in the radicalism of the dem party is probably as useful to America as GOPs winning office.
The founders never wanted a two party system and thought it was a horrifying idea. Yet, everyone tells us about the majesty of out two party system. Its just two cheeks on the same ass as far as I can see.
Agree. Without runoff elections, you have to ask yourself if you want to vote for a spoiler. With runoff elections, you are free to vote for who you want in the 1st round, without concern about a disagreeable candidate being elected with some bare plurality of the vote.
Politics is an industry.
If you knock off the Republican party, in short order you will have the same consultants advising the new third party.
Pretty soon you would notice many Republicans had changed their party affiliation.
Pretty soon you’d have a party just like the Republican Party, named Conservatism USA.
I don’t know what the solution to this sort of problem is, but I think it is the reality of the situation.
The problem I see these days, is that I don’t see more than one or two people who are true conservatives in political circles today.
All too often you wind up with a person who is very sound on one or two topics, that have no idea what the hell they are doing with regard to all the rest.
It’s a sad time in our nation. We have veered so far off the original Founding Documents blueprint.
If we could get Democrats to split themselves up into a third party, conservatives might have more influence with the Republican Party. A huge split in the Democratic Party, or maybe multiple splits that would better suit all the radical and militant divisions that make it up, would be great for the country.
If I had my way, we wouldn’t have political parties at all. Far better to have candidates with maybe an original thought or two, not a mouthpiece for some group’s standardized agenda.
But of course, the no party concept will never happen. Political parties are just too entrenched in our society.
Lemme guess :
20% say both parties are too conservative
20% say both parties are too liberal
10% say the government doesn't pass enough laws
10% say the government passes too many laws.
That's close to 58%, the above are rounded off,
The remaining 41% have no opinion because they don't know anything...dont who is POTUS, whose in congress, whose in SCOTUS.....
Well except maybe they know about the Kardashians, and MTV awards..and video games.
