Lowes has new rules regarding how it can label building products in California. A Superior Court judge laid out terms by which the retailer must advertise its 2x4s and other dimensional materials in a $1.6 million settlement order and final judgement filed on August 27. The order, brought on as part of a civil consumer protection action, lists three main rules for the retailer to follow going forward:
Common descriptions must be followed by actual dimensions and labeled as such. For instance, a 2×4 must be followed with a disclaimer that the wood is actually 1.5-inches by 3.5-inches and include a phrase equal or similar to actual dimensions. Popular or common product description, like the word 2×4, must be clearly described as popular name, popular description, or commonly called.' Dimension descriptions are required to use the inch-pound unit, meaning they must include abbreviations such as in., ft., or yd., and cant use symbols like or to denote measurements.

Liberalism really is a mental disease.
They are sucking the lifeblood out of the economy.
The moron judge, who probably never bought or even touched a 2X4 in his/her life, is the one who is at fault here.
Our justice system is anything but. As a criminal attorney once told Fred Reed, and I paraphrase: You want to avoid, at all costs finding yourself the defendant in criminal court because the verdict will have almost nothing to do with your actual guilt or innocence.
I believe it. I’ve seen it in action. It is pathetic.
“Fatty, fatty
One and a half by three and a half
Can’t get through the kitchen...
Eff’n lawyers F up everything.
LOL - best comment of the day!
What Lowes should do is state that they will start selling 2x4’s that really are 2” x 4” and then calculate the extra trees that will have to die each year to make that happen. Put out ads showing the plaintiff’s face saying that X-million extra trees will die every year for this guy.
MY GOD! Anyone smart enough to wield a hammer SHOULD know that 2X4 has always been the NOMINAL size BEFORE the final sizing at the mill.
The ACTUAL was once 3 5/8” x 1 5/8” which was dropped to 3 1/2” x 1 1/2” a number of years ago.
Is it me or are those around us just getting more and more STUPID?? It IS California, however!
I give you Barack Obama as POTUS and rest my case.
God only knows what comes next but it will not be good!
Just wait until these idiots discover things like warp, twist, wind, bow, knots and such. Maybe they might discover things like shims and wedges and legislate exact dimiensions for those as well.
STOP THE STUPID!
The 2” was 1-5/8” from the 1920s, down to 1-1/2 in the 1960s.

Typically green logs are sawn to 2” X 4” dimensions. The boards are then kiln dried, and planed to the final dimensions (1.5” X 3.5”). The drying and planing are valuable improvements — but, if you really wanted to, you could buy fresh-sawn wet 2 X 4’s.
Similarly, a McDonald’s “quarter-pounder” patty starts out with 4 oz. of raw meat. It weighs significantly less after cooking (about 3 oz.) — but, that’s not considered false advertising, because everyone knows that the 1/4 pound refers to the precooked weight.
What’s a tubuhfor?
For playing “oom pah” music, dummy!
The country has really gone down the toilet..
Blame the courts...any judge with half a brain should have dismissed such crap with prejudice...
so how long is a cubit?
If I were Lowe’s I would tell Kalifornia to go to Hell and get your own lumber. Then I would close everyone of the stores. Let the idiots find wood machined to their idea of correctness.
So this only targeted Lowes? What about all the others out there? Mom and Pops, local lumber yards, and Homo Depot, etc...?
Obama voter: These heads on these nails are on the wrong side.
Obama voter boss: Them nails is for the other side of the house, stupid.
This is a silly ruling fit for a silly stupid judge. Just another case of someone milking the system. I have bought many 2x4s to build a house and garage and shed and didn’t have any problems with buying standard building 2x4s. Judges and lawyers sometimes ‘go together like love and marriage’.
It is and always will be the way of FR...all other states are sacrosanct and perfect...no idiots among them, no siree...
The word is nonminal.
What about the 1x3, the 1x2 1x4, 2x2, 2x56, 2x8, 2x10, 2x12, looks like there is more money to be made here.
