Contra Ezekiel Emanuel, age is no absolute barometer for human vitality and dignity.
Normally, no one would care that in a recent Atlantic essay Why I Hope to Die at 75 57-year-old Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel argued that living to be 75 years old was long enough for anyone. After 75, Emanuel suggests, We are no longer remembered as vibrant and engaged but as feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic.
But Emanuel is no garden-variety crackpot. Nor is he a wannabe science-fiction writer dreaming of a centrally planned planet of robust youthful humanoids. Unfortunately, he was one of the chief architects of the troubled Affordable Care Act and a key medical advisor to the Obama administration. (snip)
Most Americans can cite a grandparents wise advice and aggregate experience as changing their lives for the better. I was blessed that three of my grandparents lived well beyond 75 and taught me everything from riding a horse and farming to accepting setbacks with calm and dignity.
In contrast, the greatest tragedy in my life was the far too early death of my mother at 67 at precisely the point when our family most needed her omnipresence, caring, and sage counsel.
Who knows had Dr. Emanuel been asked to help draft an Affordable Care Act in his mid-70s, we might not have had to collectively suffer from his youthful inexperience.

Most Americans are expected to live well past 75, some more than others:
This is from here, the interactive is awesome...
Not only that ,so many are in the psychiatrist’s office and are just the most miserable bunch of humans. That guy says that now, as he has about another 20yrs.He has so much time left to make life as meaningless as possible.
Let them depart at the age of 75.
There goes Diane Feinstien ,Nancy Pelosi’s waiting in the wings, good bye John McCain et al....
I consider myself a CHRISTIAN, but I've never been real good at turning the other cheek, so fair warning to these liberal a$$holes, on Death Panels or anywhere else such as this blowhard Emanuel:
IF ANYONE IN MY FAMILY, OR EVEN SOMEONE I CARE ABOUT, HAS THEIR LIFE CUT SHORT BY YOUR ACTIONS, I WILL COME FOR YOU PERSONALLY, AND IT WON'T BE PRETTY!
VDH’s article gets to the crux: “If Emanuels point is that living beyond 75 is unwise given the odds that society will reap less achievement per resources invested, then that frightening anti-humanist argument can be extended to almost any category.”
It takes a lot of chutzpah for Emanuel, architect of the “according to their needs” ObamaCare welfare program, to link an individual’s current “social contribution” to receiving healthcare — actually to life itself. Should physically and mentally-challenged individuals be denied healthcare and life? Criminals? Selected minorities? Lazy bums? Out-of-control breeders? Benefits-leeches? Political opponents who are “harming society”? “Short people got no reason to live” under his logic.
This line of thinking is the fruit of substituting National Socialism for individual freedom. Democrats like EE have created the climate of dependency that makes individual lives subject to abstract public policy. So much for humanity and diversity. Putting pressure on older people to go ahead and die after a life in the traces, once they can’t pull the plow is simply obscene. Himmler would be proud; Ezekiel Emmanuel should be very ashamed.
“Journalists” need to ask Obama to comment on EE’s article.
Next stop: No more social security payments after 75.
Ezekiel is a robust youthful hemorrhoid.
This guy is an idiot.
When I was 18, I thought 30 was unthinkably OLD!!!
When I hit 30, I still felt like 18 and changed the ‘Old’ age to 50.
I’m 52 now, starting to slow, but heck no! - I AIN’T old!!!
This moron is 57 and still thinkingn like a teenager.
When he’s 75(if he lasts that long), he’ll have changed his alleged mind.
Zyklon-B-Care
Die at 75? Heck, that’s just the bottom of third gear, and I have a six speed.
I am 59 — run 5Ks every few weeks. I have seen 90 year olds successfully complete the races.
"You're not fooling anyone, you know."
There are just too many people on the Democrat beaches. The Democrats need a few people to mow their lawns and pick up their dog’s crap, but those damn Toyotas keep getting in the way of their limousines.
One word: Euthanasia
Ditto.
Normally I am very turn the other cheek. Most stuff is not worth getting upset about. People that are dangerous to others should be retrained or restrained. But this kind of stuff goes beyond your normal mad dog. This falls into the same category as Islam.
I have manners and a long fuse. I am a great admirer of civilization.
Don't confuse that with being civilized.
Take values, morality, and collective debt for past services out of the equation, and we could just as easily choose not to treat severely wounded veterans, given that they are unlikely to return to the battlefield.
That certainly explains the current administration's attitude toward the VA.
