Beavercreek Walmart surveillance tape shows shooting, 9-1-1 call (video)

Editor's note: It is the general policy of Northeast Ohio Media Group not to show images of people being killed. We chose to publish this video because it addresses questions that have been raised about the behavior of the suspect and the police.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine released a surveillance video Wednesday showing John Crawford III being shot to death by police last month in a Dayton-area Walmart.

DeWine's release of the video and 9-1-1 recording coincided with a Greene County grand jury finding that Beavercreek police were justified in shooting the 22-year-old man, whom they believed was armed with a rifle.

In the footage, Crawford is seen talking on a cell phone and waving what turned out to be an air rifle at the end of a store aisle. Police arrived after a 9-1-1 caller reported that a man was waving around a gun and pointing it at people.

The cops acted just as they are trained to act - a GRAND JURY (which has a low bar to bring charges) agrees with me too.

“The cops acted just as they are trained to act - a GRAND JURY (which has a low bar to bring charges) agrees with me too.”

Im NOT siding with either side as i DO NOT know the facts other than what i saw on video and heard, but i will say this, if leo are trained to act as they did in that situation, well they def need some new teachers! PERIOD!

And since you so hell bent on some Grand Jury ramblings, we shall see how well the “oh so low bar GJ” works out when officer Wilson is INDICTED in Ferguson!

The grand jury in Ferguson should come out with the same findings as this grand jury - NO CHARGES. Of course, the “JUSICE Dept” led by the racist Eric Holder will ensure that further charges may be coming.

The “animal” deserved what he got. He was nothing more than a rabid dog that was put down.

I hope that the “bleeding heart” cop haters on this forum get to personally experience being with a “nut job” like this in their lifetime.

Just like the old saying...”A new conservative is a liberal that has just been mugged.”

plz do not think im in any way, shape, or form trying to start a keyboard argument because im not, i love FR and all the inputs, info, knowledge, varying opinions, and debate! this is the one place i get to express my opinion, because my wife sometimes thinks im “crazy” and watch/read to much news! and one of my bosses is borderline liberal also, and we but heads regularly : /

my conceal carry instructor many moons ago was retired marine, FBI, and county cop, now running for office in my county, this always has been in my brain since the day of that class, and that is there are THREE things that need to be satisfied for JUSTIFIABLE DEADLY FORCE to be used, and if they are satisfied, you have every right to use deadly force

1. Jeopardy (you MUST believe you are facing a threat of grave danger or death, your life is IN jeopardy)

2. Ability (the perp MUST have the ability to cause grave danger or death to you)

3. Opportunity (the perp MUST have the opportunity to cause grave danger or death to you)

now in the state of Va, if those three things are satisfied, you have all rights to use deadly force and you will have no criminal charges brought on to you

The reactions of some here disappoint me. They seem to come in two categories:

1. The ‘law and order” conservative types. These folks think they are conservative, but do not support a small, limited government (yes, the cops are the government). They support rapid and overbearing violence against citizens. And, they will lick any badge, at any time.

2. The Stormfront crowd.

1. Jeopardy (you MUST believe you are facing a threat of grave danger or death, your life is IN jeopardy)

And that right there is why the cops in this situation got off. All they had to say was that they believed they were in danger and the shooting is justified. No matter what the tape shows, no matter what the intent of the victim was, so long as that cop can say he thought he was in danger then no man or dog is safe.

They sell rifles at Wal-Mart...

When you pick a rifle to look at, you shoulder the rifle a few times, look down the barrel and aim at different objects (right there in the store) to see if the rifle has the ‘feel’ you want...

Guess that now qualifies for being shot in the back by the cops...

Okay you’re right I just looked up the definition of murder and it calls for premeditation. Never knew that. Thought it just meant ending a life.

Your point is well taken and I can see where you are coming from. I look at it from the simple fact of what I would expect to happen if I trucked myself on up to the local Walmart and behaved in the same fashion. The only reason I can come up is someone who is mentally unstable with perhaps suicidal thoughts.

Deadly Weapon

The term ‘deadly weapon per se’ refers to a weapon that is deadly in and of itself. It refers to a weapon that would ordinarily result in death by its use. Such weapons are also known as per se deadly weapons. A gun is a deadly weapon per se, but a knife is not a deadly weapon per se.

I have no opinion on this shooting until I watch it on a computer. Not enough detail on a phone.

Couple things.

What type of packaging was the rifle in?

Why did be take it out of the packaging and move to a different section of the store?

All of the Walmarts around have here a separate register In sporting goods around here.

If you are interested in the weapon you look at it there, put it back in the box, buy it or not. You don't keep it and go try on pants.

If he had stayed in sporting goods this probably wouldn't have happened.

Why was he acting so bizzare?

He may have been trolling for a reaction.

Keep in mind that we are in a state of heightened awareness due to muslims. I expect to hear of a mass terrorist shooting in, say, a department store or some other public place any day.

The cops would have no idea that it wasn't loaded. If he wanted to he could have had it loaded and charged in seconds.

In context, it was stupid, but not criminal.i doubt it was packaged at all. Many air rifles are simply sold off the shelf.

He was on the phone and was not paying attention and certainly not looking for a reaction. I doubt he thought about anything at all before the cop shot him.

To get a more complete picture of all the events leading up to the shooting you should view this video of the special prosecutor’s public presentation after the announcement of the GJ no-bill: http://wdtn.com/2014/09/24/video-walmart-grand-jury-announcement-in-its-entirety/

(Note: the portion of the presentation where the actual shooting video is shown by the prosecutor is not shown by WDTN in this initial report.)

My Opinions:

Many people viewing the video seem to think the shots were taken as the officer approached the subject, but I believe it was established that the two shots taken were made and hit the subject before he went around the end-cap of the aisle; I am amazed the officer didn’t put more rounds into him from his 20+ round magazine, as the subject came back towards the officer (and the weapon dropped on the ground) as the officer made hit close approach.

Race was not a factor in this case other than to provide identifying information on the subject. Had he been white, yellow, pink or purple, I believe it probably would been treated in the same manner.

I believe the data show that the subject passed by the 911 caller. I don’t think the videos ever showed the subject taking aim at anyone specifically, but he was cavalierly holding the weapon on his shoulder pointing in the general direction of the 911 caller (and his family), so I can completely understand the caller’s description. It angers me that people (including leaders in the local African-American community) are going after the 911 caller by name.

Speculation on my part, but I believe that as the officer confronted the subject and demanded he drop the weapon, the subject was startled and jerked the weapon at which point he office took his two shots. I completely understand that reaction by officer.

This was clearly a tragic situation. And as the prosecutor said, it was a perfect storm of events that came together with a tragic outcome.

After this happened, and as soon as heard the race of the subject the next morning, I feared that race would be made an issue even though I believed at the time (and still do) it was not a factor at all. Very sad.

For the record, I live a couple of miles from that Walmart and my wife and daughter had been in that store earlier the day of the shooting.
