A 59-year-old woman who was being kept alive by a ventilator after she was plowed down by a speed-demon bicyclist in a Central Park crosswalk has died, her family said Monday.

Here in the Peoples Republic of Portland Oregon, they also think they own the roads and want cars out of their way.
Here’s more on this story, here....
Marshall, 31, of East Harlem, doted on his top-of-the-line Jamis Eclipse racing cycle and kept precise records on the Web site Strava.com of his blazing rides through Central Park in which he boasted of reaching speeds exceeding 35 mph.

Is there another kind?
I’m so sorry. Best wishes!
This is a sad story but it points out that bikes are vehicles too. Cyclists sometimes blow through red lights at 20 or 30 mph as if the rules of the road don’t apply to them. Add a 180 to 200 lb man going at 30 mph and you have a dangerous situation.
Sidewalks are for both bikes and pedestrians in many jurisdictions. But law, civility and common sense tell the faster biker to yield.
If I read the article correctly he was exceeding the bike lane speed limit, and therefore would have some culpability even if he was swerving to avoid pedestrians when he hit her.
From Portlandia.
Ten foot rule!
He was cycling in the wrong lane and speeding. Speed cycling with racing handle bars in Central Park is an idiotic thing to do and he’s probably guilty of manslaughter here.
Oh. Well. In that case.
That's how Amsterdam sees things, never mind the speed differential.
Boy I learned that the hard way when I was there, they don't slow down for anybody.
In Amsterdam, there are 4 lanes for traffic:
1) Streetcars
2) Autos
3) Pedestrians
4) Bicycles
There are very subtle markings to denote the divisions, and I didn’t notice them until second visit. If you are walking in the area marked off for bicycles, cyclists will come close to hitting you and at high speeds to “hint” that you are in the wrong spot.
Did you hear the bicycle coming? I have nearly been struck by bicyclists several times. They ride on the sidewalk and I don’t hear them coming from behind.
I will be politically incorrect right now. Having worked in Manhattan for many years, I have almost been hit by black male cyclists at least five separate times. They do not heed traffic signals. They do not show any respect for pedestrians. They are very aggressive and like to scream at and intimidate pedestrians especially white ones. The aggression and boldness have greatly intensified since Obama took office.
This skell needs to be charged with murder. Kaiser Wilhelm has been noticeably quiet about this horror.
Bull! This guy was noted for his high speed racing through Central Park - his facebook page testifies to that and several Daily News commenters know him as an out-of-control rider. Unless you’ve ever been at a disadvantage to the maniac cyclists in Manhattan, you simply don’t know what you’re talking about.
The fact that he stopped is credit to him - but that doesn’t excuse that he killed a woman.
