Influential Republicans in early presidential primary states believe New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is poised to once again become a frontrunner for the partys 2016 nomination, following a news report that he is no longer a target of federal scrutiny for his role in a bridge-closing scandal.
If he had been found in the wrong, he would have been irreparably damaged, said Matt Moore, chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party. This is hugely helpful.
To have that not hanging over his head puts him back where he started from, said Chuck Laudner, an Iowa-based strategist for former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorums 2012 presidential campaign. Hes still a rock star and a compelling guy, even if he is too moderate for some conservatives. Were glad hes on our team.

Christies wealthy friends in Republican finance circles also expressed confidence that the governor has escaped what has been seen as the leading obstacle to his potential candidacy.
Its great news for Chris politically, said real-estate mogul Donald Trump in a phone interview on Friday. It goes a long way and pretty much clears up the problem he had, which was a very big problem. A lot of Republican donors are very happy today.
This was always a shadow, said former New Jersey governor Tom Kean (R), a longtime Christie mentor. But if its gone, he is set to be first tier, and in campaign where money is everything, he is the best fundraiser in the party.

Christie said at a news conference on Thursday that he will make a final decision on a presidential campaign at the beginning of next year.

It was probably Romney’s money.
They dropped a bundle against Tancredo.
Yeah - maybe I'm too sensitive to this stuff, but I have to wonder if this bridge issue is being tabled because the Democrats either: (a) want to bring it up again during a Presidential election; or (b) want him to be the GOP candidate figuring that he's completely unelectable since only moderates like him.
I will never vote for Krispy Kreme. The only difference between him and Hillary is that she is slightly more butch.
I heard it was a rePUBlican’s governor conference.
I’m waiting to see if Karl Rove gives him a kiss.
Which do you think would be more harmful to the American Revolution? A loyalist behind enemy lines or a loyalist commanding patriot troops into battle?
He lost me when he snuggled up to Yomoma after the Sandy mess.
I would vote for Christie against any Democrat and I have, but I hope that manipulative cowardly fat pig does not get the nomination. Nor do I think he is about to regain frontrunner status for anything.
Christie is a total fraud. He has governed by doing deals with corrupt Democrats and he has pushed the budget crisis down the road for everyone to pay later.
Fat boi Soprano is a Liberal DemocRat. He’s a POS.
The bridge thing would be tabled only until after he is nominated.
Bleep you, GOPe shill.
Are these people serious?
CC: I want you to love me like the gOpE loves me.
BHO: um...uh...um... let me get back to you on that fatboy.
Geez, the GOP is doomed.
"Once again"? Nice to know that he has Obama's permission to run.
Yes, but...
This may be the year that the GOPe gets what it deserves from conservatives.
