Monty really is insufferable. It’s hard to believe his monumental gaffe in issuing that victory statement just before the British 1st Airborne is about to be cut up in Arnhem.
In the neighborhood where I grew up, Monty would have had the burning bag of dog poop on his front porch every Friday night, toilet paper in the trees every spring, and eggs on Halloween.
Just because he asked for it.
Obviously, after the run across France, the Germans are piecing together a defense.
I’m going to try to do them for Market-Garden, Metz, and definitely Wacht am Rhein.
If I can get my hands on a few for Hungary or the big Soviet offensives in Poland, I’ll do that too.

According to American sources, the BV 238 V1 was destroyed while docked on Schaalsee in September 1944 by North American P-51 Mustangs of the US 361st Fighter Group. The lead Mustang, “Detroit Miss”, was piloted by World War II pilot Lieutenant Urban “Ben” Drew, and another was piloted by William D. Rogers. This represented the largest aircraft to be destroyed during the war. Drew was told after the attack that he had destroyed a BV 222 Wiking (another large flying boat). He continued to believe this was the case until he was contacted by the BBC in 1974 for a documentary and told that their research had determined that the aircraft he had destroyed was actually the BV 238 V1, undergoing flight tests at the seaplane base at Schaal Lake.[3]
German sources, based in part on the testimony of nearby inhabitants and Blohm & Voss employees claim that the BV 238 V1 was discovered by the RAF between 23 April and 26 April 1945. The Allies were concerned that Hitler could use it to escape to South America and so an attack followed shortly afterwards. The aircraft was attacked by Hawker Typhoons, or Hawker Tempests. Their strafing set the engines alight and the aircraft burnt and sank with only part of a wing remaining above the surface.[3]
She is the first US Destroyer to be sunk in a Tropical Cyclone in 1944. She will not be the last...
(A little late in joining you. Things are starting to get busier at my end, as the Allies are getting busier beating the Germans.)
(Post #4): What is it about the British? Their tanks are moving but no matter what, apparently, they stop and set up a little campground for tea (and cognac). Dang man, no way to run a war IMO.
I really wonder what the Germans thought of this guy. I know they were very worried about Patton. But what Monty says and even the way he looks with those goofy looking shorts, hat, and sweater - he looks like he's out for an afternoon stroll.
Good stuff henkster. Thanks.
I haven’t seen anything on what the Germans thought of Montgomery. I suspect they respect him for what he accomplished in North Africa and Sicily but would not fear him as they do Patton. I also suspect that after Monty cocks up Market-Garden that respect will diminish.
‘Jews, Democrats, and Bolsheviks are the gravediggers of humanity.’
I hat Nazis, but in the above they got two out of three correct. Dems and Bolsheviks ruin nations.
