A top Republican House member on Wednesday proposed eliminating the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, writing a bill that would freeze all hiring at the troubled agency and require the Justice Department to come up with a plan for transferring its duties to other agencies.
Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner Jr., the Wisconsin Republican who wrote the bill, called it both a chance to streamline government and to clean up an agency thats been criticized from the right and the left for botched gun-running operations.

Pour the alphabet soup down the sewer of outdated $hit. That goes for every letter.
The ATF was primarily a tax collection agency until the GCA of 1968. When they expanded it to regulating guns, they screwed up.
Kill the ATF.
I heard the ATFE should be a convenience store and not a government agency.
Then he can close IRS, TSA, DHS, EPA, DoE, HHS, and oh....the list goes on forever.
Maybe keep the DoD. Rename it back to its old name: War Department.
Might as well be honest.
In this economy, isn’t that what unemployment is?
How was this thing formed anyway? Was there a problem with people who like to drink, smoke , shoot and blow stuff up?
Isn’t it an old joke that Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearm’s should be the name of a convenience store, not a government agency!
Now, I need a drink.
Felonies for EVERY illegally kept Form 4473.
Defund and disband, discontinue the duties.
ATF’s responsibilities need to be checked against Congress’s constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers. I suspect that ATF does things that cannot be justified under Section 8.
That’s gotta be one of the best ads for increasing beer sales I’ve ever seen.
Other than the War Department, there is no need to have any federal agencies. Not a one of them has done a single positive thing for America during their miserable existences.
Art. I, Section 8 does not mention a single 3-letter agency or bureau. How about dropping ALL 3-letter acronym bureaucracies. To start with.
Why transfer the responsibility to Justice Dept????
Why can’t Congress just decide what the function of a new ATF would be - or what stays and what goes? Isn’t that Congress’ job?
So it’s started. I tell you, folks, if the GOP takes the Senate, funding bills are going to get interesting.
First of all, I think you’ll see the end of the Continuing Resolution in favor of individual spending bills.
And if Obama doesn’t go along, just don’t fund the agency at all. It’s hard to veto a bill that he doesn’t get, but no funding bill, no money. How hard would it be to see the ATF shut down completely for lack of funding? Or the Department of Education? Or the EPA? Or Valerie Jarrett’s secret service detail?
Congress has the power of the purse, and that power is significant. I’m betting that Boehner and McConnell will use it in some very creative, and currently unanticipated, ways.
Besides, I’ve had my current tagline for years now, and it’s about time someone tried implementing it.
I am OK with that!
