Yes, the concept of “zero” was originally Arabic. I think the word itself is Arabic. That is why it was ironic to me that the site of the World Trade Center came to be called “Ground Zero”. Just my opinion.

According to the January, 16, 2007, Scientific American article, "What is the origin of zero? How did we indicate nothingness before zero?":

"The first recorded zero appeared in Mesopotamia around 3 B.C. The Mayans invented it independently circa 4 A.D. It was later devised in India in the mid-fifth century, spread to Cambodia near the end of the seventh century, and into China and the Islamic countries at the end of the eighth. Zero reached western Europe in the 12th century."

Actually the Hindu’s invented the Zero, the Muslim just expropriated it and popularized the idea.

The Arabs - not necessarily Muslims did devise our modern numbers

Islam did not invent zero. It was invented long before MoMo was born, islam gets credited for it because they noticed it was a cool thing as they were destroying yet another conquered culture in India, and spread it to the mideast so it was more known

Islam had a lot to do with preserving cultural knowledge during the Dark Ages. Some say they invented Algebra. Some of the mosaic windows etc from their era of greatness are incredible.

I think islam (small i) invented zero.

Some pretty convincing evidence says they got it from the Hindus, the same place they got "Arabic" numerals.

The six part, BBC documentary The Story of India addresses the origin of those mathematical concepts, among other things.

They didn’t even invent zero. 2000 years before the pedophile invented a religion, the Egyptian were using the concept of zero.
