Turkey has made a decision to not only refuse to join the “broad coalition” against ISIS that President Obama promised Wednesday night is more than just a major slap in face for Obama and America. It also presents an obstacle to the success of the president’s promised “degradation and destruction of the caliphate. As The Wall Street Journal notes:
Was it only a week ago that Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel listed a "core coalition" of 10 countries willing to join the U.S. effort to destroy the Islamic State? Since then Britain has categorically ruled out military strikes in Syria, while Germany has ruled out any use of force. Now Turkey is bugging out.
The Turkish abdication goes a step further than the Brits or Germans. Not only will Ankara take no military action, it will also forbid the U.S. from using the U.S. air base in Incirlik—located fewer than 100 miles from the Syrian border—to conduct air strikes against the terrorists. That will complicate the Pentagon's logistical and reconnaissance challenges, especially for a campaign that's supposed to take years.
Turkey is behaving more as an opponent than an ally:
…the reality [is] a Turkish government that is a member of NATO but long ago stopped acting like an ally of the U.S. or a friend of the West. Former U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Francis Ricciardone declared this week that the Turkish government "frankly worked" with the al-Nusrah Front—the al Qaeda affiliate in Syria—along with other terrorist groups...

Should never have been in NATO in the first place, and at the very least they should have been kicked out in 1974 for invading the territory of another NATO member when they invaded Cyprus.

Since 0 took office, it’s been the end of everyone as an ally. Quite literally.
Our only ‘friends’ now are only uslim countries and selected anti-American dictators.
Agreed...Erdogan is showing their true allegiances now and 0bama seems sympathetic to them.
That is because they are both muslims.
NATO is a mutual defense organization, which commits its members to defend each other if attacked by a foreign aggressor. Turkey has no obligation to lend any assistance to the U.S. in a military campaign overseen by a jug-eared Kenyan exchange student that is being waged for political purposes only. ISIS never attacked the U.S., and Turkey's leadership knows damn well that their involvement is only going to be used as a political tool in the U.S. to demonstrate the presence of a "coalition" in the U.S. military campaign.
What should one expect with an enemy islamist as President of the, uh...United States
Only a few years ago Israel and Turkey enjoyed good relations all around.
If the Caliphate of ISIS succeeds then Turkey is likely looking to take it over in a partial resurrection of the Ottoman Empire.
Of course the Sultan in Washington is sympathetic to coreligionists who are trying to resurrect the Caliphate.
That ship sailed 13 years ago.
Why is this a surprise? After all Turkey is predominantly Islamic country.
Never forget what started this “Arab spring” and Jihadist uprising.
Once there was Saddam in Iraq, Mubarak in Egypt, Gaddafi in Libya, etc were keeping Jihadists under control. Then Bush-43 made the worst blunder in American foreign policy of recent years by invading Iraq.
Result? We have ISIS in Iraq & Syria, Libya is total chaos, Egypt has Muslim brotherhood, Yemen is terrorist heaven, Afghanistan is about to be taken over by Taliban.
Obummer will finish the job by toppling Assad in Syria.
That is also true. However, after Iran fell to the Mullah’s,
populated major Middle-east countries such as Iraq, Egypt were under firm control by dictators who were not religious zealots.
Toppling Saddam started the chain reaction. We can’t bury our heads in sand and not admit mistake by Bush-43. One must admit mistakes in order to have a chance at better future.
I’m not denying the mistake, just pointing out that it had a precedence in Carter’s action, which launched the modern state sponsored terrorism movement.
Bush’s action was just a replay next door.
Reagan had it right. Keep them killing each other.
What about when Turkey didn’t allow NATO jets to fly over their airspace during the war on Iraq?
turkey had a chance to join the civilized would. It rejected it as it turned itself toward the medieval savagery of its main religion.
The worst blunder was not telling the OPEC(kers) off in 1973 after the Embargo.
