Budget Cuts Reshape New York’s Public Housing
New York Times ^ | September 11, 2014 | MIREYA NAVARRO

The crushing news came less than a year after Diane Robinson and her 24-year-old son moved into an airy two-bedroom apartment in the Bronx. The city, which helps pay her rent, wrote this summer to say she would have to downsize into a one-bedroom apartment or pay $240 more a month in rent.

A public school aide, Ms. Robinson, 48, decided to stay in the apartment, in the Castle Hill neighborhood. But on an annual income of about $25,000, she is struggling, she said, and she does not know how long she can hang on. Moving to a one-bedroom apartment would mean that her son, a college student who works to help with food and utilities, would have to sleep in the living room. “My son works — he’s not entitled to have his own bedroom?” she said. “Next thing they’re going to tell me is that I’m not entitled to a roof over my head.”

Thousands of New York City tenants are facing similar choices because of cuts to the federal Section 8 voucher program and the resulting belt-tightening by the city. The rental vouchers allow low- and moderate-income tenants to live in private buildings and to pay about 30 percent of their income in rent, with the voucher program making up the rest. The cost of the program is about $400 million a year. But federal budget cuts under sequestration last year have left the program $37 million short, the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development said.

The sequester was a good idea. Even lots of NYT commenters have little sympathy for 2-person households forced to live in 1-bedroom apartments.

This entire story sounds like something you’d hear about in the old Soviet Union. Is she on a waiting list for a better apartment? Will she get one if she is related to the local party leader?

The Great Society has done so much for these folks.

Sure, if he figures out how to pay for it. When I was a college student I paid for my housing, food, and expenses--worked nights and holidays. I shared my bedroom with other students.

Who does she think should pay for it? Me?

ah yes- obamaland 2014...not only is this woman entitled to a roof over her head- she's entitled to the roof of her choosing at the expense of others....good to see her son works...he should be able to kick in $125/month for rent- as I helped out my mother when I graduated from college 30 years ago...

Wanna bet he is not paying for tuition or books and might even be getting a stipend?

I was reading about AA students who keep getting paid - free education and a stipend - as long as they are in school. Some have multiple unusable degrees.

“...that her son, a college student who works to help with food and utilities...”

Well, well, well! What do we have here?

I love the “going to college” bit. It really makes the story plausible doesn’t it?

A welfare cheat with spawn that works and earns an income...but can’t afford another $250 for rent...in a house that was originally for a single occupancy purpose that is paid for by the public. She already broke the law about it and now tells another lie about her spawn.

Tell this “college” kid to get his ass out, find a job and work to provide for himself. Then (if that dream ever occurred) he could look for a college student loan and THEN go to college.

There are millions of young people who were unable to go to college due to the fact that they had to work 40 hours a week to exist and could not go to college due to many factors, all of which, pertained to the work they were doing or the financial situation faced.

Boo-Hoo! I am crying my eyes out over her calamity. /Sarc

This woman may be the nicest person; however, her entitlement attitude is BS. She isn’t “entitled” to anything. Her son isn’t “entitled” to anything. They both need to be brought to reality. So he’s 24 and still living with his mother? She makes $25K and he goes to “college”? They sound very deep into the chit/grant/welfare/benefits parasite lifestyle. Cry me a river.

New York Times throwing a pity party for low income democrat voters... Can we assume if her son’s chipping in that his income is also counted toward the ‘thirty percent’ ... The Times doesn’t seem to care...

Her son works. How much rent is she charging him? Subsidized rents should be based on HOUSEHOLD income, not hers alone.
