A group of small town teachers have a big idea called The Sleeve. It's a device that slips over the closer-arm of a door to prevent the door from being opened from the outside. The idea is to buy time for teachers and students during a school shooting.

ya know, I learned a long time ago that you don’t have to run and tell the granny panty bureaucrats everything. The ones that actually have common sense {minority} understand the deal and it spares the ones without common sense needless worry and agitation. If I was teacher, I’d keep it in my bottom desk drawer in a paper bag. Never mind what I’d keep tucked away somewhere more private. Better to be fired than dead....
I don’t know the specifics, but the fire marshal is the final word when it comes to use of buildings open to the public.
Doors are real high on the list of what they are concerned with.

Met the young man who came up with the idea this summer and I find that fact that he is being mocked for a solution interesting
Couple of things:
1 in the case of a lot of older schools doors are still locked from the outside with the classroom key. So mock all you want about just locking the door but if there is an active shooter in some schools a teacher would have to open the door to lock the kids in...
2. Let’s just change the locks on the doors so they lock from the inside...at $65 dollars per door they end up being a lot cheaper than installing new hardware into the doors where schools on tight budgets can now at least have a possible line of defense.
I’m actually quite amazed that someone comes up with a viable cheaper and realistic alternative (because as simple as arming everyone is for us to say it’s not going to happen) that first and foremost can possibly save the lives of students and teachers and it’s being poo pooed at FR.
Purely defensive strategies are doomed to fail. I haven’t seen it, but judging by the description it sounds like leverage would be on the side of the intruder. I’ll bet I could break it and break in.
Last year I made a door locking device for anyone in my school that wanted it. It was a 4inch piece of pipe that slipped over the closer arm. Cost about 15 cents.

Well in a few more years they’re gonna have to figure out how to bulletproof Kindles and iPads because students won’t be carrying books anymore.

Problem is that it’s too simple. Needs to be painted red, have warning stickers, an instruction manual in 7 languages, and come in some sort of fancy packaging. s/

In response to a very real threat of violence where a family member works (gun free zone, of course), I made a bullet proof shield and put it in a laptop carrying case. It will stop any common handgun round, and several hits from 5.56 or 7.62 NATO ball ammo.
Maybe 10 bucks, made 2 and tested one to be sure. It looks like any other laptop case.
As far as I know it is.
