Home Depot (HD) Hack Could Be Biggest Card Breach Ever

The huge hacking attack against Home Depot’s payment systems could turn out to be the biggest breach of any retailer’s data so far. The company confirmed the data break-in but did not say how many credit and data cards are affected. The total could be as much as 60 million, according to several experts. That would be far more than the total number of cardholders impacted by the breach at Target stores.
There is no evidence that any debit card pin numbers were compromised, but according to security reporter Brian Krebs, who first wrote about the breach last week, “multiple financial institutions … are reporting a steep increase over the past few days in fraudulent ATM withdrawals on customer accounts.” The data breach went undetected for six months until banks and law enforcement agencies alerted Home Depot.

Home Depot confirms breach in US, Canada stores

If Target’s breach is any indication, the fallout from the Home Depot breach could be severe.
The Target hack cost the company hurt the company’s profit and revenue. Target’s chief information officer and CEO both stepped down in the months after the hack.
“I would think if you’re a member of the board of directors, somebody has to be the sacrificial lamb for this,” Kindervag, the Forrester analyst, said about Home Depot’s breach.
Home Depot already has had some fallout. Its shares fell 41 cents to $90.41 in premarket trading Tuesday.

Ain’t going to touch the place no more. I am equally ticked at the Fidelity Visa people. Terrible operation. Automated phone message saying my card would be expiring Sept 23rd and new cards were being mailed out. The very next day, supermarket declined my card, completely contrary to the recording which I still have from answering machine.
Anybody know where to post the recording that was a lie?
a friend in Hawaii, just told me his was stolen yesterday. Some person in PA bought the Number, produced a card. Used it at Staples for $1.00 to see if it worked, it did. Then went to Best buy to try and purchase something for $525 which didn’t go through, so they stopped that fraud. The Company seems to be on top of this fast.

Called bank and cancelled card the day I heard about this. I wrote a check for cash, and; I already have both the new card plus the PIN came Monday.
I’m staying away from Home Depot. Those bastards sold me a returned water heater that they knew was defective.

Debit-Card Fraud Spikes Following Home Depot Breach

A sharp uptick in ATM-withdrawal fraud may be linked to the theft of credit and debit cards from Home Depot stores, sources at several banks told independent security reporter Brian Krebs.
Home Depot confirmed the data breach in its payment systems last night (Aug. 8), but said debit-card personal identification numbers (PINs) were not included in the massive trove of stolen card data. Yet Krebs outlined a scenario that would nevertheless let online criminals change PINs on debit cards stolen from Home Depot, allowing fraudulent withdrawal of money from ATMs.

Home Depot has not disclosed how its payment systems were penetrated, or whether any form of malware was implanted. Krebs’ sources tell him traces of the BlackPOS RAM scraper, which was behind the Target data breach last fall, were found on some Home Depot systems, but that cannot be confirmed.
What is almost certain is that the “track data” from the magnetic strips of millions of debit and credit cards were copied from Home Depot’s systems. Track data includes a card’s account number, the cardholder’s full name and the card’s expiration date. All that information is currently being sold in “carder” markets online.
In at least one carder market called Rescator, each card’s track data is being sold with the ZIP code of the store from which it was stolen. That’s valuable to a carder, because a card-issuing bank normally won’t consider suspicious a transaction that takes place near a cardholder’s residence.
Krebs contends that if the legitimate cardholder does indeed live near the store from which his or her card number was stolen, then that might provide criminals with enough location information, when combined with the cardholder’s full name, to get started on hunting down the legitimate user’s date of birth and Social Security number. ...
